Once a city of steel and coal mining, Essen is now one of the cultural capitals of Europe, and one of Germany’s greenest cities. It's home to many historical landmarks like the Cathedral of Essen and Nikolauskirche, along with the charismatic half-timbered medieval quarters of Kettwig.
The botanical garden of Grugapark has a host of plants and flora, while Essen’s historical past is displayed through landmarks like Basilica St Ludgerus, Alte Kirche and the Old Synagogue Essen.
The main shopping area is based around Kettwiger Strasse, in the vicinity of Essen’s medieval Dom featuring several priceless artworks. Museum Folkwang features 19th and 20th-century art and several cafés, bars and restaurants line the city’s streets.
In summer you can swim, windsurf, take a boat ride or enjoy a picnic on the banks of Lake Baldeney and the Baldeneysee Seaside Beach. Essen has ice-skating rinks in some areas during winter. Movie Park Germany is also a popular attraction.
Essen Central Station features direct links to Oberhausen, Dortmund, Cologne, Duisburg, and Dusseldorf. Booking.com has tons of accommodations in North Rhine-Westphalia and Essen.
Essen was mostly destroyed in the war. Everything in the city center is either ugly 50s or even uglier 70s buildings. The shopping district has mostly Döner take-aways and mobile phone shops, public transport grinds to a 30-minute tact after 20h even on the main lines and stops at 23h, cultural offers are sparse (but if you have a car, you can always travel over the always jammed A40 to Düsseldorf, Dortmund or Duisburg … also ugly, but slightly bigger, Düsseldorf even has car sharing providers that none of the other have). Nicer houses are in Essen-Bredeney on the hill-top with the Villa Krupp and in Essen-Werden, where the Folkwang University has a good concert and performance schedule, the Baldeney See is a huge lake and the Zeche Zollverein an interesting mining-related museum with cool tours, and Museum Folkwang has surprisingly many big names for such a poor city. But other than that, avoid Essen at all cost.

Our visit to Essen was prompted by our attendance at a stamp collectors' exhibition at the "Messe". The exhibition halls and facilities are world class.
We also visited the excellent art Museum Folkwang, and the new museums at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein (discontinued but preserved coal mine and coke processing plant) as well as the Krupp family mansion, "Villa Hugel".
Essen is off the beaten tourist path, which is not at all a bad thing.
Public transportation was esy to use with a 24/48 hour pass but the main train station was pretty confusing.

Apartment was great, very clean, and It looks exactly like on the pictures! The location is also great, very close to metro station, 15min away from city center. I highly recommend it, especially for big groups, since there was more than enough space.
The only one little things: there is no hairdryer in the apartment

Not much to do in Essen.
Not much to do in Essen. I was there for a security event, so it was a fly-in fly-out for four days. I wanted to have time to visit some historical sights, but nothing within walking distance from the city centre. The town is full of shops, restaurants and bars. But that's pretty much it; I wouldn't recommend it as a place to visit.

Historical Essen was destroyed during WWII so vast majority of the city is quite new with very modern appearance except from some wonderful churches, still one can also find interesting historical monuments here - e.g. Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (we enjoyed a guide tour for two hours and had a coffee and went here to open swimming pool!), remarkable medieval old town houses in Kettwig (some parts date back to the 14th century!) and huge botanical garden (Botanischer Garten der Universität Duisburg-Essen). This summer (2022) is 8 Euro month ticket valid for all German local trains, so you can travel as much as you like.

The area around main transit station (HBF) is very metropolitan - tiny untidy shops of several cultures to quickly provide food and minor services to a traveller. Very convenient at day, but somewhat uncomfortable during evening and night hours.
I was only around there and around Zollverein.
Zollverein is an absolutely stunning venue.
Consider it as a huge park with decaying remains of an old Gardaland/Disneyland overgrown with vegetation. It's really just remains of a coal processing plant.
Note: I was outside only.
Good location for the Messe Essen exhibition centre. we walked it in 15 minutes but it is a short walk from a metro station and then two stops. Took us about an hour to get to and from Dusseldorf airport by train. A selection of restaurants and bars also nearby. Staff could not have been more helpful. Good breakfast as well and they allowed us to leave our bags there for most of the day after we checked out. Hotel gave us a city-wise travel pass which covered all buses, trams and trains, even as far as the airport on our way back..
The hotel was in front of the station, but the room had a garden view, so it was very quiet. The double room was spatious, with a desk, a table, and had a small refrigerator under the cabinet, which functioned as a counter for serving hot drinks. I very much liked the furnitures such as the closet with lightings inside, and a bench seat near the room door, where you can take off your shoes and put your coats and bags up on the wall hook.
The person at the bar was super friendly, and the food and drinks were excellent!
Excellent location, right next to the Messe in Essen. Very friendly host. Clean apartment.
The host was very quick in providing the responses. My arrival time had changed at the last minute and I could quickly contact the host to provide the updated time. He was very kind and made sure my stay was comfortable.
The facilities provided were very good and the apartment was bigger than expected.
I would highly recommend the apartment to everyone visiting the Messe.
Location was good. You are very close to city center and A40 highway. Room and the bathroom were exceptionally clean. The staff cleans your room and changes sheets every day. Bed was amazingly comfortable, sheets were fresh and clean. I had a great sleep and rest. After 23:00 you couldnt hear any noise from the streets or other rooms. Breakfast was delicious and with good rations. There are a great number of middle-eastern restourants in the street of the hotel.
It is a very interesting hotel. Very industrial. The surroundings are not special. It is a suburb of Essen, Pretty far away from the center of Essen, There are not nice restaurants in the area. The Biergarten in front of the hotel is very nice but pretty low quality food. I recommend this place for 1 or 2 nights. You can easily acces bike trails that are very well maintained a couple of minutes away from the hotel
I came to University of Duisburg-Essen in Essen, Germany as a visiting scientist. I visited this hotel before I move into the rental guesthouse. Is it a recently built hotel? The facilities are very neat and there is enough room size to use alone. The hotel location is very close to the shopping plaza. This hotel will be the best choice if someone want to come on a journey or visit Essen.
The Rooms were excellent nice & clean had a great view over the Christmas Market, the location for us was ideal as we used the local transport to get us to other towns nearby & we knew the car was safe in the car park near the hotel.
Breakfast was amazing an excellent choice especially as it was a continental breakfast, we all enjoyed it our breakfast at Motel one in Essen
Good location 10-15 mins by foot to the center of Essen, 20 mins car ride to Oberhausen Centro, new room, baby bed service, paid parking spaces, great selection of breakfast, including a pancake machine, TV had HDMI connection & Bluetooth speaker, bathroom was modern, the interior of the room was modern and the hotel had a nice welcoming feel. Excellent price quality ratio.
The location is very near the centre (I used to live in Essen so I know the area) very close to Cathedral. The breakfast was really nice (lots of choice) and was included and the price was really good for the class of hotel, nice view as well. Check-in very quick and easy and helpful staff. Check-out at 12 is always helpful. I will stay again everytime I go to Essen.
My second time in this hotel, which means it must be doing many things right. Location is excellent, right next to railway and U-station for easy access to Messe Essen. Easy to visit Christmas market in the evening. Rooms are good, breakfast has more options than what you sometimes see in central Europe. No outside noise, even though my room was in second floor.
Friendly and helpful staff at check-inn, even gave us an upgraded room (suite). Location is excellent, right in the city centre, with hotel parking just around the corner. Everything nice and tidy! There even is a pillow menu :-)
Everything - location to the Hauptbahnhof, essen city's commercial/food centers, the kitchen and the sleeping rooms, batheoom facilities were ok as well. All in all a decent environment to stay in.
1. Very clean in the room and outside.
2. The owner of the hotel was nice and helped us with check in the next day of our arrival.
3. Washing machine is able to use upon request.
Breakfast was great and the staff were really helpful. On arrival, the reception manager even helped me to find a parking space, which is quite difficult in the area of the hotel.
The hotel was of a surprising high quality. Rooms were extremely quiet. Airco was reasonably good. Wifi was good. The bathtub was perfect. The bed and bed linen were excellent.
The silence, even if the room is located towards a quite frequented avenue (traffic-wise).
The location of the hotel, close to Ruttenscheid Strasse and to the tramway gates.
Very close to Klinik Essen Mitte. Very friendly stuff. I was wondering before my stay whether it is an older type of hotel, but was modern bathroom, top bed and very clean
Clean, modern hotel with free parking. Very close to city center. Everything was really good, better than expected. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.
