Groningen is a beautiful city , I would prefer it to Amsterdam . It is a nice size, there's loads to see and do. The Groninger Museum always has terrific exhibitions and the building itself is amazing. The Ship Museum is excellent also . There is a lovely ambience with many cosy cafes and bars and great eateries such as the Drei Gezusters. We had great takeaway food at the Vis Markt , the Kibbeling is very tasty and the portions everywhere are generous.
As it is a University city , there is a lively student atmosphere,
We walked everywhere as everything is accessible. It is a wonderful spot for a city break.

We liked this time a lot because of the boat tour through the town and our visit to Groninger museum with the Rolling Stones exhibition. We had diner at the Branderij and at Eetcafe de Slingerij. Both good quality for a fine price and kind staff.

Groningen is a lovely univeristy town easily reached by train. Taking a walk through the center to visit the almshouses (there is a good guidebook for that) and their gardens was a pleasant way to get to know the city. A big plus is that there is no mass tourism as in Amsterdam, mostly day trippers from the area or just across the river from Germany.

I would definitely recommend Groningen as a place to visit.
I would definitely recommend Groningen as a place to visit. It is a little gem. It’s easily reached from Schipol airport by a direct train that takes just over 2 hours.
I only discovered it as I found Dutch family that live here. Definitely recommend as a change from Amsterdam. The town has plenty of shops and restaurants, museums and a canal. Everything is accessible by foot or local buses. Just be aware of the cyclists.

Groningen is a very lovely smaller town with a nice old town surrounded by water canals. In the city I spent most of my time at a conference at the university, whose campus itself is very interesting and I had the opportunity to see the particle accelerator there as part of the excursion - certainly very interesting for those interested in (bio)physics and (radio)medicine. In my free time I walked through the old town and around the canals, which was very nice and romantic. The same could be said of the walking path from the city to the university area, which led through beautiful, almost wild countryside along horse paddocks, one arm of the river, among meadows, etc. The town also offers great gourmet experiences. I was only able to spend a few days in the city, so unfortunately I didn't have a chance to explore the surrounding area.
normally this is a very good hotel with good facilities and convenient location just outside Groningen. Nice rooms, simple, functional but rather large and spacious rooms. Only superior rooms have a bathtub at quite a substantial increase in price with no further benefit other than a free bottle of, no other benefit to the room, a free bottle of water…. Breakfast buffet is excellent for Dutch standards and here the Dinner menu is very good too. very busy on Sunday for breakfast. Easy bike ride to the city or fast bus connection.
The hotel is superbly located in the centre of town right on the Grote Markt and next to the Martini Toren and provides great access to shops, restaurants and attractions. The facilities are of a very high standard. The rooms are spacious with beautiful lighting, have a coffee / tea station with a Nespresso machine (with supplies), excellent shower and a novel glass wardrobe, and the Wi-Fi works seamlessly at decent speed. Breakfast is a feast. The Willem Albert Cafe serves excellent coffee, and food. The staff are great.
I really enjoyed my stay. The room was clean, the shower worked well and housekeeping cleaned the room on every day of the stay. The girl that helped me check in was very nice and was helpful with my special request for the check out. There were bus stations only a few minutes away from the location, as well as a supermarket that was open till 22. The city center was also at a convenient walking distance from the hotel. The area felt safe and was very quiet as well.
The NH Groningen is a very comfortable, modern hotel with all the features and efficiency you would expect from a 4-star hotel. Its big plus is that the old town is only a ten minute walk away. There are many eateries, pubs, bars and shops in easy reach. Part of the reason for this is that a quarter of the city’s residents are students studying at the places of learning. Good, secure (though not covered) parking for my motorbike.
The room was very good - huge bad, 2 faucets, toilet and bathroom was separated. Clean, neatly and comfortable room but it wasn’t a big - for us this wasn’t a problem.
Very good staff - guy from reception is very good communicative, friendly and pleasant. 5 stars for guy from reception!
Breakfast - wow! Very good service, tasty and fresh.
Really if i will go to Groningen again - only to this hotel!
Thank you!
The room is beautiful with a great view of the Martini Tower. The hotel is located in a central area but on a quiet street.
I forgot something in the room and got a call from reception only a few minutes after I left saying that housekeeping had found a pair of trousers. I was actually positively surprise that they reached out. :-)
A beautiful old hotel (the oldest in Groningen, the receptionist said) right on the Great Market. Lovely wood-paneled lounge, friendly attentive staff. Super bathtub with hot water at high pressure. There are signs of wear and tear, and they are planning to renovate. I hope they don’t ruin its old character.
Breakfast was standard fare, Continental choices, cooked options etc and fine for a buffet style, but on the pricy side. Hotels in Groningen are never 'cheap' so relatively good value for the city, well/conveniently located for the centre but parking expensive.
The hotel is well located in the centre of Groningen. It is a very well kept building and I wish I'd had time to visit the bar/restaurant as it looked very nice. The room appeared small but made up for it with a mezzanine that led to the bathroom.
Good location of the hotel. Nice staff and a creat atmosphere due to all the students.
The breakfast was ok. There might be many better place around but it was convenient. The corner room was great seeing the sunset over Groningen.
Nice old hotel in the heart of the city. The room was clean and comfortable, the old bar/pool room where breakfast was served was very nice and hospitable. The restaurant looked nice, but was to expensive for a simple supper.
Excellent hotel, sparkling clean, cozy, the design is perfect to relax after a long working day. It has everything you need. The location is superb, at the very centre, close to everything. Excellent WiFi.
Location in the centrum ideal to visit museum and city
Room had actually everything wat I needed, they had even a ventilator.
It was old building, old room but clean and decent,
Really stylish room in a very stylish hotel. Fantastic views from the room over the centre of Groningen. Overall great hotel and really good location for exploring the town.
