Meppel is a quiet town located in bucolic surrounding.
Meppel is a quiet town located in bucolic surrounding. Despite some bulk agribusiness on the outskirts, Meppel retains a pleasant pedestrianised centre. It is located on the long-distance cycle route LF9 and the spectacular village of Giethoorn is 35 mins cycling away. The De Weerribben-Wieden National Park borders the outskirts of the town and Dwingelderveld National Park is less than an hour away on the bike.

A nice town with park, with a lots of terraces.
A nice town with park, with a lots of terraces. We walked to the centre for dinner and it was smelling barbecue and that made my husband very happy. Train station, bus station, taxi. Easy to find parking space for your car.

We visited 5 cities in the Netherlands -- Haarlem, Amsterdam (daytrip), Venlo, den Bosch, and Meppel. Meppel was the best, the most quaint, of them all. It is not a large city, it sits in the northern, rather rural province of Drenthe. Given its location, it tends to be off the beaten path, especially for Americans.
We happened to be in Meppel over the 2-day Open Monuments celebration when heritage sites are open and free. We visited he 15th century church, an unexpected sculpture garden beside the city hall, the Old Meppel historical society, and the old wooden windmill that is being restored beside it. Just outside the city (10-15 km) are the southernmost Hunebedden, ancient gravesites that were built perhaps 3000 years ago. (We had a car that we used to visit the Hunebedden).
We found the people, most of whom make seamless transitions from Dutch to English, to be friendly and welcoming. Getting around is easy because the entire town is walkable. Our hotel (City Hotel) included an excellent breakfast but we ate lunches twice at a city center bistro called de Brasserie where the food was nothing short of fabulous. The day we visited the Hunebedden we created a remarkably inexpensive and wholly satisfying picnic from the supermarket near our hotel.

Meppel is a town that has lovely central pedestrianised areas and brilliant places to eat and drink.
Shopping is great and a lot of history there from the war.
Been working here for 9 months and staying away from the town.
Will not do this any longer. Love the place.
Modern mini Apartment in the outskirts of Meppel. Bathroom was nice, very safe neighborhood, clean and nicely furbished. It is a room in the garage-building with a door to the garden. This garden is the private garden of the owners, so you are literally in their backyard. It was extremely cold in the beginning because of the low outside temperatures and it took the heating several hours to bring the room up to an acceptable temperature. Maybe it could be a consideration to turn the heating on before the guests arrive.
Roel was an amazing host. Everything was simply perfect. And his dog was adorable! My friend and I spent the weekend in Meppel. The location was perfect situated infront of Jumbo (supermarket) and 2 mins walk to the city center. The room upstairs was so cute and had everything necessary. A small living room for just the two of us. Coffee, tea and refreshments were provided. I would say the place is better than the photos! Definetly will always stay there when visiting Meppel. Thanks again!
The day of arrival, we received a code that allowed us to check in ourselves. This was quick, convenient and Covid proof. The room was immaculately clean and very comfortable. The hotel is located in the heart of town, easy to reach by car en public transport. Restaurants, bars and other entertainment are all at walking distance. Breakfast was fresh and plenty. Excellent value for money.
The hotel has a great central location which meant that town restaurants and sights were easily walkable.
The room was well presented and clean.
The breakfast was lovely
The owners were friendly and welcoming
Cutest B&B I have ever slept in I would suggest it to anyone visiting Meppel as it’s located right in the center. The owner trusts the visitors by letting them check in themselves. Great experience!
Location opposite train station. Excellent bike rental next to it. Safe lock up for bike.
Fridge in hotel with soda's, beer, white wine. Help yourself and pay at check out. Friendly staff.
