Somerset Apartments offers a range of accommodations on Lord Howe Island, located between Neds Beach and the Lagoon, allowing easy walking and cycling to nearby shops, restaurants and the Visitor... First of all, Lord Howe Island is one of the most beautiful destinations we have ever encountered, and the Somerset Apartments were a wonderful place to stay while enjoying the island. We visited the museum, and went scuba diving, bird watching, and hiking. The apartments are basic, and ours had a small kitchenette with a microwave and refrigerator, which allowed us to cook small meals. The apartments are very conveniently located, midway and a short walk to both Ned's and Lagoon beaches. There is only one restaurant nearby, but there are two small grocery stores that had some small pre-made meals for the microwave or burgers. There is homemade ice-cream at the post office, and a food truck at Ned's beach when we were there. For slightly more distant restaurants, a shuttle for pickup can be arranged. We had to cancel our first night because the weather delayed our plane, but we were aware of the 8 week cancellation policy, and the management provided us a letter for reimbursement from our travel insurance. We hope one day we can go back!

What a beautiful, pristine island. Hiring a push bike is definitely a great idea to get around. We stayed at Somerset Apartments which was very central to everything. I can highly recommend the Anchorage as a place to eat. The walking tracks were well sign posted and the views from the top were well worth the trek.
Keen walkers and hikers would love this island. Small Mts to climb as well as bush walks through the verdant rainforests. Short distance across island. Bring your main supplies as limited expensive food supplies. Many restaurants still closed. Weather can cause flights to be cancelled. We are not so mobile now and I feel we have left it too late to fully enjoy island. Should have come 10 years ago. Bicycles or walking best ways to get around. Mainly work vehicles on island. Don’t think we’d come again as mobility issues will continue.
The Island has much beauty to enjoy; probably a bit over the top in their activities re eco/conservation etc. A lesson in ideology v practicality is needed. Very limited eating facilities open!!! Anchorage ok but very expensive with ridiculous rules, Fish/Chips at golf club ok but way out of ease of access; Museum eating attitude ,take it or leave it, Bowls club well, just finished Hamburgers and we were told ok folks time to go home, truly!! The bright spot was Thompsons, the Burgers and Scallops were the best and reasonably priced same as other shop items. Lots of beauty spots, Neds Beach!!, grab a bike, quite easy
A very unique and special place! The water is beautiful, with amazing snorkelling and diving. There are beautiful birds everywhere. If you don't mind walking or cycling, then you don't need to hire a car - everything is within walking distance. There are plenty of walks/hikes/treks to do. The food is quite expensive compared with the mainland, and there are limited meal choices at most restaurants, particularly if you are vegetarian/vegan. We stayed 6 nights and that was plenty enough to do 3 days diving, the Mt Gower trek, most of the other walks on the island, and a lot of bird watching. We highly recommend doing the shark snorkel with Dive Lord Howe - an amazing and unforgettable experience!
The island is stunning and offers lots of walks for different fitness abilities. Other activities such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking and boat tours are available. Prepare for your walks before travelling to the island as it's very easy to nearly cripple yourself on the first walk, super sore calves after climbing/ descending hundreds of steps, but the views are worth the pain. Strongly recommend intermediate hill circuit and Malabar, Kim's lookout and north beach loop.
First of all, Lord Howe Island is one of the most beautiful destinations we have ever encountered. We went for scuba diving and bird watching, and enjoyed both There is a small museum, with interesting displays of island history and nature. Most accommodations are a short walk to both Ned's and Lagoon beaches, which are both beautiful. There are a few restaurants, and small grocery stores that had some small pre-made meals for the microwave or burgers. The weather can be tricky, with high winds that caused plane delays and bad water conditions. The planes to the island may institute weight restrictions for luggage, which might require waiting for the next flight if the bags don't make it on your booked flight. We didn't have problems, though. Most transportation is walking or bicycle, but our hotel had a shuttle.
