Royal Oak Guesthouse enjoys a location in Orkney, 1.4 miles from Scapa Beach and 11 miles from Maeshowe. This guest house features free private parking, a 24-hour front desk, and free Wifi. The location was good. The food was excellent. The rooms were comfortable. There was a lounge with games, sofas, and a large TV, but we were too busy to take advantage of it. Eric, the host, was very friendly and accommodating. He got us everything we asked for. The water was very soft, so only a small amount of soap or shampoo was needed. It didn't feel like we were intruding in someone's home. It felt more like a mini hotel with a fair amount of privacy for coming and going. Also, we had a ground floor room where we didn't have to drag suitcases up, which is hard being older adults. The stay was very enjoyable.

Couldn't ask for a better accommodation than at Corriemuir! We feel fortunate to have met David and Marlene-it was like a home away from home. A peaceful stay in a quiet location with award winning breakfasts prepared by David. Marlene is a kind, helpful hostess who has added lovely touches to their home's décor, including beautiful cross stitch art! And of course we can't forget Gizzi the lap cat, who is one of many reasons to stay here! We stayed here only three nights, but feel as if we've made life-long friends....
Toab itself is nice countryside, not much there but a fantastic base to get around the Islands, could not be handier to get to Kirkwall and the ferries, the airport is only a couple of miles away. We found so much of interest and beautiful scenery within a few miles. Lovely relaxing place.
It is a small, clean quiet town with some good restaurants and things to see like St Magnus Cathedral and the town museum. It is a good base to visit Scapa Flow, Stromness, the various assorted standing stones and the neolithic ruins at Scara Brae - how you do it is up to you but we took a tour, you could hire a car, you could ride bikes. You can hire wheels if one of you needs assistance when walking. But if you want to island hop then consult the local travel centre well in advance as the ferry time tables are tricky - or do it on your first day, And be aware that some places close Saturday and Sunday and not all stay open late - book your restaurants. They seem to stop serving by 9pm so think of eating probably from 6pm to about 8pm. They take bookings. Taxis are easily hired - phone for one - you will need to take a taxi to the Highland Park Distillery and you MUST book your tour there in advance - just turning up doesn't get you in.
Depends on the type of holiday your looking for, Toab is quiet, out of the way by the sea.. but with good access to other parts of Mainland Orkney... lots of beach combing and plenty of place to walk ... A short drive into Deerness with different attractions for visitors .. again depends on what you looking for.. But Toab isnt far from anywhere on Orkney as mainland isnt that big anyway... But a hell of a lot to do...
I would not stay at this hotel again out of choice . We visited a restaurant out of town for a meal and it was superb. I then read the reviews for this restaurant with rooms which was in a beautiful location with lovely views and they were excellent also far cheaper. The restaurant was the Foveran and I would thoroughly recommend it. Also visited the Italian chapel and the site of the discovery of a 3000 year old settlement both of which are a must to see. I played golf at the Kirkwall golf club very friendly and welcoming although totally self booked with honesty box available .
This is a great location to explore the East Mainland of Orkney. There are great beaches and coastal paths. We enjoyed walking along the coast from Dingieshowe beach and the spectacular Mull Head. We enjoyed visiting Sheila Fleet’s Kirk Gallery and cafe. Lovely gift ideas and delicious food. Deerness Distillery is also worth a visit as they make delicious gins.
