Grímsey (0.5 miles from Grimsey Airport)
This island property is along the Arctic Circle, next to Grímsey Airport and 25 mi off Iceland’s northern coast. It offers a restaurant, guest lounge and free public area Wi-Fi. Is there a way to make of an already wonderful place as Grimsey an unforgettable paradise? The answer is yes. At Básar Guesthouse. The hotel is at the airport facility. If you come by boat it takes some minutes by walk, but the owner Gagga came to pick us by car. She is a professional and attentive host, always available in case of need. Breakfast is majestic. What you need to spend the day making excursions and hiking around the island. Rooms and beds are super comfortable, warm and welcoming. Even if as an Italian prices in Iceland are quite high for me, I found the price very fair and the service outstanding. Don’t miss your chance to stay at the Básar Guesthouse while on the island. A diamond inside a larger diamond that is Grimsey.

Gorgeous ocean trimmed with cliffs covered by adorable puffins. Refreshingly windy. Undulating green hills will entice you to keep walking until there is no land anymore. A bit of walk from the airport, the middle part of the island holds slightly more houses, shops and the restaurant. Yes, "the" restaurant. My meal of fish of the day was amazingly good, not just the fresh fish but also surprisingly fresh salad. Check out the craft shop for local handmade sweaters. You can also sit and have a cup of coffee there. Everyone I interacted with were very nice. I hope to go back there sometime in the near future for a longer than 1 night stay.
Grimsey can be difficult to reach- 3+ hours boat journey over often rough sea- but where else do you have the chance to cross the Arctic Circle? In summer season you can see puffins, and in other seasons the Aurora Borealis. If you are really, really lucky you may even see Falki, or gyrfalcon, the national bird of Iceland!
Fantastic stay at Guesthouse Basar! Charming in every way! Great good at the only restaurant on the island. We stayed two nights photographing puffins and terns and the opportunities were phenomenal. Loved this place in every way!
