I love to go to Ronnie store in town everytime I go up there. They have a great store, almost good prices on clothing. I buy shot glasses when I go there. They have to be unique and I don't have it. There is a restuarant that my brother liked to go, it's a Mexican restaurant great food, a little high but it's worth it.
There is not a lot to do in International Falls when Canada is closed. We encountered a lot of racism, as we are a mixed race couple, from many locals who continuously looked at us like we were committing crime. The area near the boarder was not nearly as bad as Rainier (where everything that was fun happened to be). I would only go back when the boarder is open because otherwise you are stuck with not much to do. We ended up leaving 3 days early because we were so uncomfortable in the town.
We really found the motel and the town just great. WE have flown into International Falls for about 20 year now and did not find anything worth staying in as a motel/hotel. We wend through customs and straight to Canada. Since we could not go into Canada due to Corvid we found Nomad and loved it.
If you are not too much into fishing and water related activities then 2 nights should be good. Do the Sunset boat tour with Captain Bill for a memorable experience. The Trails from Rainy Lake visitor centre and Ash Lake are good .
We stayed at the Lodge as it was the closest we could get to Lake Kabetogama and Voyager Park. We had a wonderful time boating, fishing and hiking and had some great food at Arrowhead Lodge. We hiked Ellsworth Rock which was quite incredible. International Falls doesn't have much there. There is the border crossing, which of course is closed to us regular folk, a few restaurants and a wonderful grocery store. We had a wonderful time doing what we went to do and meeting new people.
It was a closing chapter of my childhood so it was bittersweet. My mother is from the Falls and all of her family plus my grandma lived there. I spend almost every summer there. We would go from the Falls to Thunder Bay, Ontario to my other aunt's and family. My cousin's attended school there so we went to hockey games...The pep band Dirty Dozen...Bronco's everything. Alot of my mom's family worked at the mill...we had friend's in Fort Frances. Used to swim at the City Beach by Ranier...I don't know that we'll get back as most relatives are gone. With the border closed I couldn't stock up on my MacIntosh toffee. But the Coffee Landing was fabulous.
