The best place to be based when going around the Quebrada if you go in January. Lovely restaurants and shops, quiet, not so busy. Comparing with Purmamarca and Humahuaca is the place to be based. We didn't have a car and instead, we booked excursions every day. I'd recommend doing that. Going with a car might be useless for some excursions where you need a 4WD or a local who knows the tricky gravel roads very well.

Best place to base yourself north of Salta.
Best place to base yourself north of Salta. You need a car really to see the tourist sites, would recommend hiring for a midday late afternoon pick-up so you can return later in the day.
Would recommend 1 day driving there, then 2 days based in Tilcara to visit the mountains and salt flats. Then return to Salta on the final day visiting the small towns on the way back.
There are two driving routes there. Take the less windy one there when you first collect your car, as the windy route is more complicated to drive (though nothing to fear).
Tilcara has the best restaurants in the area, in particular go to the cake shop La Casa De Champa for the strudel

The house was very close to the centre, yet thanks to it's location inside the block, it felt very private.
I must say, the photos do not do justice to this accommodation - in real life it is much more nice than on the photos.
We will recommend it warmly to anyone needing some privacy and something extra.

A beautiful town with amazing vibes!
A beautiful town with amazing vibes! We really enjoyed visiting the archeological museum and Pucara de Tilcara. An amazing hike up into Gargante del Diablo. Great markets and night life. Very friendly and safe town.
Really nice resort! We stayed in one of the two casitas and it was wonderful: large, with a nice view and a hammock. The hotel has a small spa that has to be booked, we used it once and liked it!
The breakfast was nice, and the restaurant has great food. We had dinner once there and it was tasty!
The location is 7 minutes to town, but it’s uphill and the road is unpaved so be aware! Tilcara is super safe so no worries about walking back in the dark!
This hostel was amazing! I stayed in a private room for one night with a friend, and the bed was so comfortable and clean. Linens were included with the room and the bathroom had soap/conditioner/shampoo as well. The complimentary breakfast included bread, cereal, fruit, coffee, yogurt, and more. Tilcara is a small town and this hostel is located about 1 block from shops/bars/restaurants. Definitely recommend staying here!!
Very nice hotel located a couple streets from the center. Gives you a warm feeling compared to the town. They have a jacuzzi and a treatment room. Breakfast was great. We ate there dinner all three night and enjoyed it very much. We got a large room with an adjacent living room and kitchenet. Great service, friendly staff helpful with the area. Would definitely recommend
We had a pleasant stay at El Obrador. It is an original site with cabins and garden a short walking distance from the center of Tilcara. Cabin room was new and well organised, bed was comfortable, everything was clean. Bathroom were on the other side of the garden in another cabin together with toilets.
El Jardín on a quiet street, just 2 minutes walk from bars and restaurants. The hotel is quiet, clean, with spacious rooms, and hallways, comfortable beds and plenty of hot water in the shower. Staff is wonderful. We loved the place and decided to stay a few days longer. 100% recommended.
Best stay so far in Argentina. The owner of this cozy place was extremely kind and welcoming, always ready to help whenever needed. The rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean. The location is also great. It is situated in a peaceful area of Tilcara, but close to shops and restaurants.
Great location, lovely staff (Fede at the reception was really nice), the hotel building had a nice relaxing grassy area in the middle. The apartment itself had all you need, was well equipped. A good continental breakfast (selection of pastries, juice, milk, tea, coffee…)
The hotel has an authentic style, beautiful design and decor, and is an excellent base for exploring Tilcara and its surroundings. The room was clean and in a good size. Great location, hot shower, friendly helpful staff. Good value for money in Tilcara.
We loved the deco of house and location. Garden is full of succulents and cactus which brings extra charm, and kids loved to play around them! Gaby was very helpful and responsive too! We definitely recommend this place if you stay in Tilcara.
Quiet little castita located on hills of Tilcara. The casita felt private with our own outdoor seating are. The host was very helpful for what to do in the area. The shower was hot and the beds were comfortable.
The place is really cozy and welcoming. Staff is extremely helpful all the time and the food is delicious. Also, it is close to Tilcara’s main attractions: Devil’s waterfall and Fortress of Tilcara
Very nice clean smart hotel on edge of town. Staff were very nice, rooms were cleaned each day very well. Pool was fantastic and much needed after a long hot day. Had laundry service.
Beautiful hotel and room. Very comfortable bed. Swimming pool. Expensive, but everywhere in Tilcara is and at least you feel you're getting some luxury for your money here.
