Au Retour du Lac, hotel in Recques-sur-Hem

Boasting a garden and views of lake, Au Retour du Lac is a bed and breakfast set in a historic building in Ardres, 16 km from Calais Railway Station.

Wonderful house in an amazing garden! At the bottom of the garden is a gate that gives access to the path along the lake, nice walk (slight detour) to the town. The room with en-suite has its own entrance. Breakfast is in a very charmingly decorated dining room. The host is very helpful and made every effort to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Breakfast with eggs from her own chickens, home made jams and home baked cake was lovely and plentiful. We stayed just one night on our way back to the UK, next time we will try to have some more time there. Ardres is a lovely little town with several restaurants - we had a great dinner. We'd love to go back.

The apartment was exceptionally clean and very tastefully furnished. The welcome cocktail was a wonderful surprise, and the breakfast basket was lovely. Views of the lake were fabulous, both from the garden and the apartment. To top it all, the bed was extremely comfortable and we had a great night's sleep.

The location is lovely, there is a very nice bar area and the food served in the restaurant we found to be exceptional. It's a short 40 minute drive from the Ferry port which was ideal for our needs. Our room was not as described from booking.com, our room requirement stipulated a bath and there was none. We had ants marching into the room from the window seal. We managed to bung up the whole with loo roll which did the job. Reception was indifferent to the issue! WiFi was non existent, you can connect to the network but it doesn't break out to the internet in any useful way. 4G is present so tethering was the only option. Our restaurant experience as mentioned was exceptional in terms of the quality of food although the first course was served after an hour's wait...they had a mix up!

The Chateau is ideally situated for the Calais to Dover ferry. We have stayed here 4 times now and it is a real treat. Tucked away in the countryside but 20 mins to the ferry port. It has undergone a recent upgrade and its even better than before. It’s a beautiful place with real charm and not overdone so that the “old world style” is still evident. Fabulous restaurant, great wine list and great place to relax before heading home.

Location is very good and the food was excellent.

Location is very good and the food was excellent. Our welcome (by the manager we think!) was DREADFUL and the room was tiny and the bathroom had a damp drains smell. We are frequent visitors and will return - so long as we are assured this was a one-off experience!
