The breakfast was delicious and always delivered with a smile. The room and facilities were great and the view spectacular. Fantastic bath however shower temperature was a bit tricky to navigate, a very gentle touch was needed between freezing and boiling!
Loved the bench by the lake, very relaxing stay

We've visited Rothbury many time over the last 30 years and have stayed at the Queen's Head Hotel and had many enjoyable family meals there. It's an old building and although it was refurbished a few years ago you have to accept that it's not a new building so there's some creaks and knocked corners.

Breakfast was fine as a Coeliac the chef adjusted the menu so that I could have an omelette which was not on the menu. Eggs benedict fine as were pastries, although just a little bit too much hollandaise sauce.

The Rose & Thistle is the hub of Alwinton, it's a small village and the locals use the pub, it's nice to see and chat with. We went with a plan of the places that we wanted to go and see which I think is worth doing. There are plenty of country walks and cycling looks popular in the area.

Alwinton was a wee hamlet away but with a good car and good roads was a very useful place to base ourselves. We had never been to Northumberland before so we were out and about to see visit major site such as Holy Island, Etal and Ford, Hadrian's Wall etc. We found the roads and driving very easy. A good breakfast set us up for the day and we only snacked lunches and enjoyed finding places to have dinner on our way back - the Tree-House at Alnwick was great. Being National Trust members was a help with expenses but there were also a good number of English Heritage sites.

The friendly staff, and such a good place to use as a base to explore and walk. Not crowded and the setting is idyllic. A great place for all age groups if you want to enjoy nature. Roads are narrow but easy to drive, use a sat nav though.
Rothbury is about 10 miles away and well worth a visit. Cragside house is a must if weather good.

A lovely old house with similar dated furniture, fixtures and fittings (very old walls and windows - no double glazing) set in beautiful countryside. There is a campsite next to the house, which is run by the hotel owners. Very friendly staff. Excellent food at very reasonable prices. Less than an hours drive to two beautiful castles, Alnwick and Bamburgh.

We loved everything about it!
We loved everything about it! We only stayed one night as we were en route for Scotland. The views could have been amazing, but we arrived at dusk and the weather was misty and drizzly next morning so the view was obscured. The accommodation was very comfortable, especially as we had exclusive use of a warm and comfy living room with satellite tv. The three bedrooms are upstairs, which may be difficult for elderly or disabled people to access, though the rooms are large.
Alwinton is a little off the beaten track and the roads are winding and sometimes narrow, but it was well worth the effort.
The location is excellent with lovely views all around. The hotel is also very quiet. We particularly liked the building itself and the view from our room. It's an old and very interesting grand hall in lovely gardens. Our room was large with a huge bed and plenty of storage space. Wi-fi was also good.
Breakfast had a large selection included a cooked breakfast. I was able to leave my bags within the property and a key provided to my room early as I was going to be returning to the hotel late at night. Very large bathroom for my room with great toiletries.
Last hotel before crossing the border. Room was clean and well appointed with an excellent and modern en-suite bathroom. Manager and staff were very friendly and helpful. This is an excellent place to stay when visiting the beautiful and remote border hills.
Hotel clean, comfortable and excellent value for money! Rocky and Ros are wonderful hosts and all the staff are very friendly. All the food is very good, fab breakfast... the chef is willing to make anything you want. Would definitely visit again!
This property isn't in Alwinton it's in Byrness. Great for me, I know the village and knew before I travelled. The property is lovely. Don't go if you specifically want Alwinton!!
Location was very nice and hotel looks impressive with a nice large garden. Staff was friendly and helpful. Clean sheets, good water pressure and a bath. Toiletries provided.
