A very busy place even though it was not peak season. We stayed across the lake from Ambleside and it was much quieter and prettier. Be prepared to pay for parking and toilet access in all public areas in the Lake District and only a credit card is acceptable for payment.

Ambleside is a good starting point for day trips around the lakes. There are plenty of restaurants including a Michelin restaurant...advance booking advised. There is a waterfall 20 minutes walk from the town centre. Pubs with live music most evenings. Windermere is only about 7 minutes by car or half an hour walk.

The area itself is amazing, loads of pubs, bars and restaurants around all offering various meals, I would book in advance for most of them to avoid disappointment. Pitch & putt really good or mini golf for families. plenty of walks around and further if you desire. regular bus service to other areas of the lakes.

    Beautiful town and friendly people.

Beautiful town and friendly people. We ate lunch three times (in four days!) at Fresher's Café and really enjoyed the food (obviously). They have their own delicious home-made quiches. I am sure this has to be the friendliest place to eat in the Lake District. Special mention to Michael, who was super helpful and humorous. On the day we did not eat there, we went next door! To the Great North Pie Co and I had the best steak and ale pie I have ever had. It was served on mashed potato, with mushy peas and onion gravy.

The service was impeccable as was the morning breakfast service. The owners have put a great deal of work and thought into restoring and keeping the place up to date and modern while making sure to retain the old charm of the guest house from the late 1800’s. There are little details that that show up such as a drying room for folks to dry off their hiking gear and shoes thanks to the notoriously rainy and wet area. They are close to Ambleside (3-4 minute drive to the shipping and dining district) The room and bath were top notch.

Exceptional stay here!! We booked in for a trip to the lakes to walk and have some down time in Ambleside, you can walk into the middle of the town in 5 minutes. Very clean room, with a lovely bath and plenty of space for our bags. Big TV for watching in bed after a days wandering. Bed was super comfortable, plenty of space and very clean. Breakfast had a brilliant selection and was really tasty. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Looking forward to coming back again in the near future!

The location was perfect, just a minutes walk into the centre of Ambleside, with parking directly outside the property. The views from the apartment were amazing. Check in was very easy picking the keys up on arrival from outside the apartment. The owner, Dave, was available at all times if needed and was very welcoming. The bottle of Prosecco on arrival was also a lovely added touch. Would definitely return in the near future.

The staff I met at ferndale was lovely and the hotel was a very short walk from all the bars and restaurants. Amazing views, hotel provided hand wash, body wash and clean towels, and they put me in the dog friendly room at the back of the building which I was thankful so I wasn’t worried about barking ect. I have been to the lakes for the last few years and this is the only hotel I would be happy to visit again.

Location is excellent at the top of Lake Windermere. We had a view of the lake from our room so very pleased with that. Room was adequately spacious and comfortable. Staff always very friendly and available. Over all the hotel suited and provided all we required. Dog friendly hotel. We don't have a dog but appreciated the restaurant separating those with dogs from those who don't.

Extremely clean and well presented throughout. Kitchen well equipped with all you could possibly need. I'd argue the photos on booking.com don't do it justice as it was more spacious than I was expecting. Excellent location for Ambleside shops and restaurants as well as popular walking routes.
