The Belted Will Inn, hotel in Farlam

We were looking for something different from typical hotels and loved the pub/BnB idea in the country near Hadrian’s Wall. The pub closed at 8 pm so noise was not an issue.

String Of Horses, hotel in Farlam

Dating from around 1659, the String of Horses is a traditional coaching inn is set in the country village of Faugh, 8 miles from Carlisle and junction 43 of the M6 motorway.

We liked everything about the String of Horses. Our room with a King bed was large, bed was comfortable and bathroom a good size and remodeled. Bar had great atmosphere with a nice fire. Dinner was excellent.

Scotch Arms Mews Bed & Breakfast, hotel in Farlam

Located in Brampton, the Grade II listed family-run Scotch Arms Mews Bed & Breakfast features 7 rooms with attached bathroom.

This is a challenge to answer. The Scotch Arms is a lovely 1600s building(s) that was incredibly well restored. (My partner is an architect, and he said the owners spared no expense in the restoration.) It was a delight to be in such a beautiful treasure of a B&B. The question is difficult to answer because complimenting the wonderful physical establishment is, Dianne, the warm, friendly and knowledgeable owner/host. She gives everyone a warm welcome. On this trip we are staying at 7 hotels/B&Bs, and the Scotch Arms stays in our minds as one of the best on this 20 day trip.

The biggest problem for me is your address for Belted Will Inn in Farlam, a small village. It is, in fact, sited in Hallbankgate a much bigger place some 4 miles away. Most misleading and a completely different type of location.

We used this pub with rooms for a one night stay to break the journey to Scotland. An excellent welcome and a comfy spacious room which was centrally heated but also had an oil-filled radiator as back-up if needed.. Good hand-pulled pint of Wainwright and a filling, well cooked evening meal in a quiet dining room served by the friendly bar-man made for a most enjoyable evening. Enough malts to make for an interesting after-dinner session! Breakfast was an array of excellent fresh fruits ( rasps, blueberries, grapes and more) followed by freshly cooked scrambled egg covered with generous slices of smoked salmon. Wholemeal toast, butter and jam topped off an excellent meal. Good value.

Although we did not take the correct turning at Farlam on arrival the location was ideal for touring the area. Talkin Tarn is just a few minutes walk away and the lovely market town on Brampton a short drive. The private garden is ideal for sitting in absolute peace. The bedrooms comfortable and the dining room half way up the stairs a nice design feature. With chocolates, tulips and a bottle of wine to welcome us .. what else would you want?
