Decoration was classic and elegant. Room was very clean, bathroom spotless. Staff were the best - everyone was helpful and polite. The breakfast was clean and tasty. Beautiful setting outside, good for walking.

The hosts are very welcoming and happy to help with information on the local area. The location is beautiful and perfect for a peaceful getaway, ideally located for Hadrian's Wall, Corbridge, Hexham and many more local attractions.
The room was clean and well thought out and the bed was very comfy.

Best thing about our stay was the young lady who booked us in. Very professional, friendly and helpful.
First impressions at the check-in desk can colour your impression of any hotel.
Generally though, as we were only saying for one night prior to flying, we had a very nice room and an excellent night's sleep.

The welcome at Matfen was lovely, being seated in the great hall while your car is parked by concierge and bags taken to the room is a great touch. Our room was spacious enough and we had a lovely little balcony with views to Matfen village which is 2 minutes away. The rooms were spotlessly clean and great amenities including fresh milk, the decor of our room is a little tired but it didn't detract from our stay. I also had a fantastic facial in the spa and we used the pool, sauna and steam room which were very good. Then to Emerald restaurant which was incredible such a wonderful surrounding to enjoy delicious food and a great bottle of South African Pinotage. We definitely recommend a stay here and we loved it so much we have already booked again to stay in December with our parents. See you again in a couple of months. The setting is gorgeous. The hotel is full of character and period features but also completely up to date and luxurious. We had an outstanding stay, it exceeded our expectations and we would return in a heartbeat! We were on a bed, breakfast and evening meal basis. We had a lovely visit, the hall and grounds are gorgeous, staff were very friendly, rooms immaculate and food was delicious. I enjoyed a wonderful treatment in the spa to finish off a most enjoyable visit. Highly recommended.

Sits in a very scenic location near the village of Matfen...
Sits in a very scenic location near the village of Matfen but also near Newcastle and Hexham. A very impressive looking hotel and inside did not disappoint. There has a lot of character. Food was good and staff excellent. Perfect hotel to have a relaxing break and plenty around if you want to see things eg Hadrians Wall or Corrbridge. It also has a lovely spar but best to book treatments in advance.We will definitely be going back.

Our room (70) was good (with an excellent bathroom) though quite small, and storage space for clothes etc (we were there for 4 nights) was only adequate The hotel staff were all smartly dressed in uniforms, cheerful, helpful and really pleasant, though many of them had only recently started there. Nothing was too much trouble for them - and they particularly made our stay memorable.

Arrived after a long journey and day competing at Belsay Horse Trials, to be welcomed with a glass of fizz and shown to a wonderfully quiet comfortable room (with my favourite Penhaligon toiletries) and they even kept the restaurant open for us to have dinner. Didn’t have time to test out facilities, but would definitely recommend for a return visit.
