Perfectly placed on the Coast to Coast path, we were greeted by friendly staff and taken to our very comfortable room. Dinner and breakfast were delicious, and we were very well looked after. Thank you, Royal Oak Hotel, for a lovely stay.

I booked this hotel because of the location, near to Keswick. After parking we walked round the front looking for the entrance. Tha view from the front was amazing but we couldn't open the door so we went round the back and finally made an entry. This is where the ,fun' started .It was like travelling back to the 30s. Very old and not particularly stylish brown furniture. A man ,looking like Jeeves introduced himself. We asked if dinner was available but he apologised and said he was the only person in the hotel. I asked if he had a bar and and he showed me into a very cold dark room where the drinks available were a very poor selection. We went up to the room which was large but feel cosy. The view over the lake was fantastic. We tested the beds and looked at eachother and agreed to leave. We met the member of staff downstairs and I basically stated my case about leaving. The best way to describe it to him was that he had a vintage Rolls Royce without an engine and on that we left.

Situated perfectly. Very clean. Fabulous staff. Good breakfast
Absolutely stunning landscape. There are lots of beautiful walks from the hotel and a great tea room - the Flock Inn with wonderful views from the back seatin area. It is short walk to Stonethwaite which has a great pub and mining museum in the church. The best thing is the serenity and lack of other tourists.

very well located if you want to stay somewhere quiet but also be in short driving distance from lots of popular hikes and Keswick town.
Some of the best views around here.
I would say don't stay here if you don't have a car, stay in Keswick.
not sure how frequent busses are but would be a pain as the shops are 15mins away driving if you forgot the milk!
again if you like boozing then stay in Keswick itself as plenty pubs / bars etc.
Food is great in Keswick loads of options, good hotel restaurants etc from Rosthwaite to Keswick along main road too. also plenty of places to stop, park, hike, picnic etc as you drive straight by the lake.
Very dog friendly everywhere we went. Cat Bells and High Spy are some of the friendlier climbs / hikes with amazing views and also good for your pooch!

Beautiful walks and stunning views of the fells.
Beautiful walks and stunning views of the fells. There is no need to use the car as there are many walks around, two pubs nearby, and a cafe. There is a regular bus from Keswick that comes through Rosthwaite to Buttermere and back.
The location is excellent for walkers, but it is quite remote, so maybe not ideal for families with small children looking for kid-friendly activities.

I love this part of the world, I never get tired of driving or hiking the valley and the surrounds no matter what the weather. It is a staggeringly beautiful place and it is sometimes hard to believe this is in England.

The location is incredible, perfect for heading out into the surrounding hills and valleys etc. The Derwent water circular walk is a must. The walks are challenging ! (not all) and walking boots etc are a must! There are no shops in the village just one small tearoom and two pubs/hotels, Keswick is a six mile scenic drive.

Lovely location with nice walks nearby.
Lovely location with nice walks nearby. Just don't expect great tv reception or wi-fi signal at the hotel, but the views, scenery, location, welcome from the staff at the hotel all combined more than made up for this. We loved our stay and would love to return again at some time for another visit.
We booked a bunk room with four beds. It was perfectly OK for a party of blokes climbing some hills. The hotel has had a lot of money spent on it and it was elegantly decorated (even the bunk room) and spotlessly clean. The food was better than standard pub grub, and good value for money. It is of course in a beautiful area. The staff were charming and friendly. Altogether a very well run establishment.
The staff Iona was so friendly and welcoming
The breakfast menu was extensive and good quality products
The evening meal in the restaurant was beautifully prepared and a fantastic choice
The Riverside bar friendly some nice whiskey
The ambiance was typical traditional Lakeland luxury at an affordable price
Location perfect for Borrowdale walking
The hotel was lovely, clean and very welcoming to dogs. Our room was located on the ground floor, spacious, gorgeous decor and ideal to nip out with the dogs for a toilet stop. Great location, to explore surrounding area. Bus stop right outside so easy to get bus into keswick. Breakfast was exceptional. We would definitely return.
Cracking cosy countryside hotel, perfect for walks or a good book and a pint. Recently renovated the room was lovely as were the public rooms. The breakfast was excellent, wonderfully dog friendly and a decent drying room. Coffee machine available throughout the day and an excellent set menu supper option.
The Royal Oak Hotel is in the heart of Borrowdale - the most beautiful place in the world! Easy to get to and easy to access many stunning walks. Room was cosy and very comfortable - all that I could have wanted without extra fuss. Great lounge area for guests. Excellent breakfast with a good choice.
Fabulous stay, food and staff very friendly. We loved the heated boot room so our boots and coats were dry for the day after. Perfect starting point for a hike, we did Eagle Crag, Sergeants Crag and Ullscarf one day and Grange Fell and Castle Crag the day after from the hotel.
Traditional country hotel. Beautiful lounge with real fire and dining room with perfect white table cloths and napkins. Cosy cocktail bar and public bar serving good pub food. The location is in a quiet corner of borrowdale. Perfect if you are a walker. Also very dog friendly.
Perfectly placed on the Coast to Coast path, we were greeted by friendly staff and taken to our very comfortable room. Dinner and breakfast were delicious, and we were very well looked after. Thank you, Royal Oak Hotel, for a lovely stay.
Hotel has had a recent refurbishment and is stunning throughout. Food was excellent for both evening meals and breakfast. Super friendly staff and posh boot room with individual air dryers for your walking boots. A walkers paradise!
Stunning location. Walks from the doorstep. A dog friendly hotel including special treats left in our room! Superb breakfast. Coffee machine available all day - very welcome on return from a long wet walk!
