Located halfway between Edinburgh and Gretna Green my wife to be and I stayed here just for a night before eloping the following day. We had the place to ourselves, our room was very spacious and tastefully decorated and dinners and breakfasts we had in the Ghillie restaurant were excellent. A very memorable start to our visit to Scotland for all good reasons.

Backbrae House is exceptional.....a Jewel in Cainwath
The House is beautiful & set in an idealic location with outstanding views. The facilities were perfect - comfortable, cosy & quiet.
The owner was more like a friend with excellent knowledge of the area.
We loved staying at Backbrae House & we both agreed it was the best B&B we had ever stayed in.

Symington is not somewhere you would rate.
Symington is not somewhere you would rate. Staying in the hotel and visiting Symington would not normally occur in the same sentence i.e. while you might want to stay in the hotel you would never think of visiting Symington - there is nothing to see.

We could only stay for one night, so didn't have the chance to experience much really. Climbed Tinto Hill - a lovely walk with great views and a super little tea shop near the car park.
Had a fantastic evening meal at Barony Restaurant in nearby Biggar - would recommend this very strongly!
The hotel is absolutely stunning, and furnished impeccably. We met Sandra at breakfast on our first night and she was incredibly helpful and friendly, and on our second morning we didn’t make it for breakfast after a late night at a wedding. She ordered a taxi for us to pick up our car and made us a coffee while we waited. She couldn’t have been more accommodating. We were here for a wedding, so I’m trying to figure out excuses to come back. Highly recommended.
I was thoroughly impressed by my experience at the Tinto Hotel. The lobby exudes elegance, instantly setting a tone of sophistication. The restaurant not only entices with its aesthetics but follows through with delectably crafted dishes. Most notably, the warmth and professionalism of the staff made a lasting impression. Their extreme friendliness and dedication to service truly elevated.
This place needs knocking down its very un kept the place smells of damp and there is mould growing up the wall in my room, the whole place needs an update or to close. There was no bar open or evening food available. Only saw one member of staff who was run off his feet as I'm guessing he was the only staff there. Sad to see a hotel like this being run down & not looked after.
The location was good and the hotel had been updated since our last visit. Sadly the breakfast was not good. The hot dish had been made well in advance of our ordering and had obviously been left in a heater, I felt that the hotel wasn't so busy that the breakfast could not have been freshly made to order.
The hotel is a long historical one, rich of culture and style but was also recently renovated. This means a great combination of vibe, culture and comfort!
Food is really great.
Lovely quiet location. Stunning hotel. Very clean. Delicious breakfast. Staff on arrival were amazing. The lady was ready for us! Breakfast staff was very attentive too!
Location is great, very close to Tinto hill. Room is very clean, breakfast amazing. Staffs are very nice, and helpful. Will come back in summer again. 10/10 hotel
Breakfast was brilliant. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful! Immaculate hotel. I’ll definitely stay at Tinto again. And recommend it to my friends and family.
