The staff were amazingly helpful … they let us check in early (4.30am!!!) and let us come back (after we’d left), to use one of their rooms to shower, after hiking … at no extra charge! SO kind! The rooms were basic, but adequate and excellent value for money! Very pretty hotel and excellent views!

Toraja Heritage Hotel, hotel in Rantepao

Toraja Heritage Hotel in Rantepao features accommodation set in the traditional Toraja-style buildings. It boasts an outdoor swimming pool, a spa centre and a fitness centre.

The staff were nice and helpful ... really excellent. The property has a very unique and picturesque look ... it's made to look like traditional Toraja houses and that made it a special experience. So we had a great view from the balcony (see photos). The breakfast had sufficient variety and was of acceptable quality. We also appreciated the fact that the hotel offered a free shuttle service into town since the hotel is a little far out (which makes for the nice scenery, of course ... no complaint there).

Mama Tia Family Homestay, hotel in Rantepao

Set in Rantepao, Mama Tia Family Homestay has a garden and shared lounge. Featuring a shared kitchen, this property also provides guests with an outdoor fireplace.

I love this homestead and definitely plan to come back to see the ceremony in August! Together with Jansen, we attended four different funerals and visited all the days to get a complete picture of this process. We also traveled with him to different places (the work of a guide today is 600 000rph for a group of up to 3 people, and this is for the whole day, i.e. 8 hours minimum, i.e. the price is quite pleasant) and Jansen is the best guide you can only dream of. Jansen knows all about the traditions and history of this place, while he has good and understandable English. The homestay is wonderful. I spent almost a week here and felt at home. The rooms are very clean, smells good and beautiful. There is a good fan and it is quite comfortable to sleep with the window open. Also, the room has really good lighting and a sufficient number of outlets. The shared bathrooms are clean and, although I usually prefer a private bathroom, these were quite comfortable to use. Please note that there is a good hot shower on the ground floor, on the first floor there is a little old equipment that can work intermittently - hence in other reviews there are complaints about the lack of hot water. For me, this was not a problem, because it takes a couple of seconds to go down to the shower on the ground floor. A pleasant surprise was the breakfast, which included the price! I'm used to it being often just a cupcake or fried bananas in Indonesia. But here they serve toast or pancakes, fruit and avocado and eggs. You can also have lunch or dinner by ordering food from the menu at a good price - everything is very tasty. Hot coffee, tea and drinking water are always available for free. The terrace offers a beautiful view of the mountains and fields and it's just nice to relax here. The Internet was working smoothly and there was enough of it to work. Jansen and his family are wonderful people and thanks to them, I was very much imbued with the life and atmosphere in Toraja.

Rosalina Homestay, hotel in Rantepao

Located in Rantepao, Rosalina Homestay offers accommodation with seating area. There is a private entrance at the homestay for the convenience of those who stay.

Rosa and Enos are very friendly and helpful hosts. Clean room and nice (shared) terras. Walking distance to shops/ restaurants. We booked a tour with Amos ( through Enos), a very knowledgeable, friendly guide. I would really recommend him. Enos was the driver for the tour and he is a very good chauffeur. We also rented scooters through Enos for 100.000 IDR per scooter per day, and they were very well maintained. It is nice to drive through the area (but you might to get used to the traffic😉). Nearby the homestay (on walking distance) there is a very nice place to have something to eat or drink; Kanaa. The food and coffee is great there and the staff very friendly.

You should explore the countryside and the villages. The colours and the views are amazing. People are warm and hospitable wherever you go. They are very cultural and want to keep it that way. The food is varied and can be delicious if you do your research before you get there.

Rantepao is a perfect location to explore the Torajah area; Torajah is a mainly christian area on a mainly islamitic Island, with very typical ceremonies, often related to death and funerals. We took the bus from Makassar which takes about 10 hours to get to Rantepao, but it is an interesting journey.

Amazing and outlandish culture and scenery surrounding the city. Traditional housing can even be seen within the city centre. The scenery outside Rantapao is glorious, and travel with a guide highly recommended to discover the intricacies of this very different culture, provide local employment, avoid causing offence or excessive traipsing on private/family land, and because a decent map is hard to find. Take a day (or a few) in the city itself. It is safe and surprisingly sweet when you slow down and take it in. As in so much of Sulawesi, people are gentle, honest and kind.

Perfect place to stay (better a bit out of the city center) to enjoy nature and explore the area of Toraja. The city itself not much to do except some good restaurants but a great starting point for excursions in the Toraja region.

loved everything about this place - it is not fancy, but it is very clean and the Hostess is fantastic. we arrived late and she made dinner for us when we got there. The traditional meal she cooked the next day was also great, chicken in bamboo. There is a full bathroom outside the house with a hot water shower, western toilet and two sinks - very clean. The traditional house would not be able to accommodate a bathroom in the building itself. This is an experience to stay in real Toraja house - it is not a fancy hotel - but it is great!!

Amazing stay at Nuansa Homestay! Aldhi, the owner, and his family are lovely, they have helped us from the very beginning to the last moment: picking up us at 5 am, getting a local guide in Toraja, driving us to have dinner, helping to book the bus tickets to Tentena, and more. The accommodation was a traditional Toraja house, simple but very clean and well-preserved, making our experience feel authentic. If you are looking for wonderful accommodation in Rantepao, stop searching, Aldhi's homestay is definitely the place to be!

The place has everything you need - a great and affordable setup for domestic and international travellers with hot water, really delicious and filling breakfast options for an extra 25.000 and 24 hour free tea, coffee and water refill. The owners, Rosalina and Enos are lovely - they helped us with any questions we had and stored our luggage when we went trekking. Because it's a homestay it's a much nicer experience than a generic hotel. The place has a simple charm to it with views of rice field and is very comfortable.

If you are after an interesting trip to Toraja, I highly recommend Wisma Papa Tias. Pak Yacob and his family are kind and gracious hosts, and you get a good sense of what living in Toraja is like. If you enjoy the country life then you will surely not be disappointed. Some notes: The place is a bit away from Rantepao, where most of the restaurants are located. Make sure you arrange some sort of transportation (car with driver/moped etc.) so you are mobile.

Probably the best place and experience we've ever had. It's a bit more expensive than your regular accommodation but if you can spend an extra 10 euros a night come here, it's so so worth it. If you've been traveling for a while in SE Asia this will feel like a 5 star hotel. The host is so accommodating, her tour was incredible and the food is the best we've had in Indonesia. Hope some day we can come back here.

The homestay is located in the center of Rantepao. The host family is very nice and welcoming. The rooms are simple, but big and very clean. It's great value for money and the family will make your stay very pleasant. Daude is an experienced and highly recommended guide. We did a one day "cultural-tour" with him and it was a great experience. We saw and learned a lot about the Torajan culture.

SARAH, the owner, is amazing. If you stay anywhere else in Rantepao you have dropped the ball. I real homestay and felt like party of the FAM. Especially, making dinner with CHEF Melissa. I got the Sambal recipe I have been looking for! There is a reason the Lonely Planet highlights the Castle for Toraja! Don’t stay anywhere else!!!!

Immanuel & Melvin were super friendly and helped us with transfer from makassar to rantepao. When we arrived late at the evening, they made us food for dinner and helped us finding a torajean guide for the funeral and a hiking trip. Besides we can recommend the breakfast with the tasty pancakes, fresh fruits and juice.

We had a great stay in the traditional house. Mama Valen and her family are very welcoming and friendly and helped us find a good guide and motorbike/scooter for our stay in Tana Toraja. It’s a 10-15 minute bike ride from Rantepao center which made it very quiet and peaceful. The food was excellent!
