The private house was right on the Kumano.
We stayed only one night but wish it was longer.
Shino is the perfect host! After eating breakfast at her cafe, we went to board the bus across the street. I completely forgot my bag. Shino made sure I got it back! She had the bus company flag down the bus we were on and delivered it to me.
Her homemade meals and warm accommodations will not be forgotten any time soon!!

Tanabe was our starting point for our Kumano Kodo trek so we stayed in Tanabe only one day not realizing how much there is to do in Tanabe. If we ever come to Tanabe again, we will be sure to stay longer to enjoy all that there is to do there. Having visited Japan so many times, this trip was probably the best of all. I followed the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage and experienced both the people, the culture and the religion of ancient Japan. I spent in total about 4 days walking and all of the accommodations (family run b&b and a hot spring hotel) was all very clean, with tasty food and friendly people. A great little town, and ideal jumping-off point for the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage. The pub quarter was a fun place to get a drink and dinner: great Tako Yaki. Both the Tanabe Tourist Information Centre staff and the Kumano Kodo Travel staff were impeccably professional and helpful in making arrangements for the pilgrimage walk. We explored this small pleasant village, and took hikes into the forest, what magnificent nature! The host is truly welcoming, we received a home-made dinner and breakfast, and had a chance to chat with other travellers. The tatami mats were very comfortable and not too hard to sleep on like in other locations ;) Once again thank you for the pleasant stay. Wish we could stay longer!

The friendly host interacts with guests who were made to feel at home; he even played the guitar for us! Memorable stay.

Lastly, we also impressed with the light in our room (not sure other room has same light), it allow adjustments of brightness and set to night/sleeping ambience mode.
