The room included drinks at the rooftop and at the bar lounge. Also, the room was big and the bath was amazing. The hotel was right in front of the Unzen hot springs so we could walk around and look at where the martyrs were killed.

We had in-room onsen, which was amazing. The public onsen was also good. Dinner in a private room for our party was delicious. The town is very convenient to the mountains and the rest of the Unzen part of the national park.

Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December.
Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December. Not so pleasant if it rains.
Hiking nearer the ridge may not be suitable to those who are not so fit as it can get quite steep.
Using the ropeway could ease the trip a bit for those who have some health challenges.

Suitable place for relaxation and hot springs, The accessibility is not so convenient unless you travel by car. The hot-spring-village is just lovely small so it’s better to combine with other nearby sightseeing places.
The hotel has a long history and while old, it has been maintained fairly well. The room was comfortable, I was able to enjoy the hot spring at my leisure and the staff were very accommodating. They play background music in the hallway but it was loud enough to hear in my room when I wanted to sleep. When I asked if they could turn it off, they did, without any problems. It was a very comfortable, quiet night’s sleep. Dinner and breakfast were also included in our reservation and I found it to be quite substantial.
This is a small local onsen hotel. I had a comfortable stay for a night . My room included a washroom and for the bathroom we used the shared public onsen. The onsen is excellent which is clean and spacious. There are few rooms of onsen (both indoor and open air), so we can choose trying different ones. In overall the stay is really reasonably priced. I would recommend it if you are going to stay in Unzen.
The location was great since it was within walking distance to Unzen Jigoku and many other tourist attractions. The food buffet selections were very diverse and I appreciated the modifications to make it safer and to prevent the spread of Covid. I enjoyed the arcade area with ping pong tables and karaoke. I also enjoyed the rooftop onsen and I thought the bath temperature was perfect.
They’re spot on with all the things that you’d want from a highly reputable hotel.
The cleanness, great location with incredible scenery, amazing food and not to mention the ‘out-of-this-world’ service quality.
For the price, I was very satisfied with the Ryokan experience at Azumaen.
I certainly would recommend to others.
Perfect location to explore Unzen/Shimabara. The owner and staffs are extremely friendly and helpful, told us their favourite onsen spots/restaurants/activities etc. We enjoyed chatting a lot :)
Our Japanese Tatami room was spacious and spotless clean. Nice view from the window!
We would definitely come back again.
Gorgeous views of Oshidorino Pond from the room. I stayed in the room at the end. Room was enormous - two beds a
Desk and plenty of space for luggage. The room also had a separate sitting area (I didn’t use it) bathroom and toilet in their own rooms as well.
Room had all I needed for a basic stay in Unzen
Room was spacious and comfortable, with own private onsen. They offered different patterned yukata for us to choose! We ordered dinner and breakfast and they offered the best meals we had to-date fr hotel/ ryokan. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. Free coffee / tea at lobby were a bonus.
It's a very relaxing place in a beautiful area for a good price. The hot springs in the hotel room with the sea view was as amazing as it looks in the photos! Some of the reviews said that the staff didn't speak English very well, but we don't know any Japanese and had no trouble communicating.
Extremely clean. Old style hotel. Great room and very good size with towels and yukata if you need. Hot tea and water provided. We enjoyed the breakfast. Japanese style but not too overwhelming. Close to unzen centre ad there are restaurants for evening food there and plenty onsens
Truly a home away from home, and the perfect social hostel experience. Very kind and knowledgable owner, perfect location steps away from the bus station, Unzen visitor center and Unzen Jigoku, and a local onsen ticket is included in the stay price. Can't wait to come back!
The hotel located right next to the bus stop coming from/going to Shimabara and is also extremely close to the other attractions nearby. There is a small section in the room where you could sit and enjoy the scenery. There are indoor and outdoor bath too.
The view from my room was great. I could see the sunset lake. The room was clean, and the facility was new. The hotel’s location is center of the unzen onsen district, which is convenient. The price is very reasonable, and I would pay more.
The hotel is a bit old and the quality of food is just so so. Of course, the food served had a lot of vegetables, which is good. The view of this hotel should be very nice but it was a foggy and the visibility is so low just 20M to 30M.
The room included drinks at the rooftop and at the bar lounge. Also, the room was big and the bath was amazing. The hotel was right in front of the Unzen hot springs so we could walk around and look at where the martyrs were killed.
While not the most elegant hotel in Unzen, it was a good balance of price with services and ambience. The dinners and breakfasts were amazing and a highlight of our stay in Japan so far.
