The hotel was great, hanging out by the pool was wonderful. Reminded me of the Road hotels in Morocco with the pool in the centre open with plants around.
The meals were all very tasty and portion sizes just right. The view from our balcony was informative and immersive to watch. Our room was kept spotless and netting around bed much appreciated, that being said we had only one mosquito bite between the two of us. Many people came by on the tour to take photos of the pool, I think the hotel was part of the tour of Old Town.
Shout out to Esther at the front desk, always friendly and took care of any needs we had.
Wifi was excellent.

The house is a beautiful gem within old lamu town. The architecture is stunning, the rooms are freshened by fans and the pool is great to escape the day’s heat.
The house staff is incredibly helpful and Peter was a great caretaker. We would also warmly recommend arranging a tour of the old town and of shela, as well as a boat tour if one wishes, with Abu. Abu is knowledgeable and loves his job; he is a great storyteller and a great artist (ask to see his recycled art). Walking around Lamu with him and learning about this unique place from him was a wonderful experience.

Lamu is a mesmerizing town with a beautiful history. The people are very friendly and welcoming. For instance - the town can be like a labyrinth, which makes it a bit challenging sometimes to find spots - even with Google Maps. Either people ask you if you need help or you can ask them and they show you the way - many of them even walked us to the location. This experience was so wonderful - I would definitely come back again.

Great, quaint town.
Great, quaint town. The scent of the donkey excrement is off-putting but seeing them is sublime. Being a coastal town, there are many ‘captains’. I had my transport pre-organized with my accommodation so be weary of that and potential scams, as well as the impromptu tour guides. Touch water, take a sunset sail boat ride, and visit the beach, maybe even Shela. Locals were very nice and friendly, warm welcomes. Affordable restaurants as well, Sailor’s Joint for example. I stayed at Subira House.

A beautiful resort, with many amenities with a lot of details paid to the decor. Unfortunately, not the same attention was given to the 3 restaurants. Poor quality food with a limited selection except for a very nice breakfast buffet. Had confirmed a twin bedded room, but did not receive one. The beds are extremely firm as the mattress sits on a cement platform but does have a nicely hung mosquito net.
Easy access across the water to Lamu.

- The ocean activities are marvelous!
- The ocean activities are marvelous! Amazing experience, memories I will always treasure. Food was also nice, a lot of seafood. Very culturally rich too!
- The town is dirty, because of monkeys, people in Lamu seem to have gotten used to it, but for an outsider its not. In addition, they don't treat the donkeys right, so it's sad to see them suffering. Lamu is a small town, I wish they would think of other means of transport and at least for people just walking, donkeys should be forbidden. There was also a lot of trash on the street, even in monuments.

Lamu is quite a unique place which is different from the main land of Kenya. You can enjoy the historical environment, beautiful beaches, sun rise and sun set, relaxing on the boat/dhow. And Lamu people are very kind to visitors, I love it. Some activities in the sea may be affected by the tide. So, it's better to ask people in advance when you can do the activity you want to do.
Mohammed is a very great host. He welcomed me so nicely and offered a guide to show me around Lamu. We also made a food arrangement and him and his family cooked for me for the whole of my stay there which was affordable as food can be quite tricky when new. You will feel at home. I loved the upstairs rooms because of the ventilation, so would highly recommend those. It's also situated 7 minutes away from the main street so it will give you a good tour of old town when figuring out old town. Overall a great experience for budget travellers
This is a wonderful place to stay! It's a little haven from the busy lanes of Shela and Lamu Town .... so peaceful and calming. Its pretty garden, pool and relaxing ambience make it a stunning choice to totally unwind.
Yoga and a massage spa are available.
The staff are friendly and personable and the food is excellent. One evening we had a choice of a swahili meal cooked by local women ....incredible !!
We loved our stay and were sad to leave.
The staff was really friendly and organised a boat taxi from airport in advance. Despite of a technical overbooking they found a good solution for all travellers. Instead of the booked room we got an Apartment next door. The Location ist perfect to walk around Lamu Town and visit the fort and Museum and the small shops in the second row roads. The breakfast was good. You could choose between Continental or Suaheli breakfast. We had both.
AMU house is a beautiful old and carefully restaured historical house. And the terrace on the roof top is perfect for relaxing and reading. The right place when you prefer the authentic life of Lamu to the touristy places of Shela.
Thank you, Mary and Hussein for your hospitality, for your time, for organizing a stunning sailing trip, and for our unforgettable walk on Manda Island.
A very beautiful and charming swahili palace. Josh is very nice and helped with everything, even with things not concerning to the accomodation. The room was very big and I could use the Kitchen and the top terrace with very nice views. Best place in Lamu if you want to avoid the fancy resorts.
Beautiful premises, good location, very clean and safe. Exceptional shower (really). Breakfast met expectations. Keep in mind it's a guesthouse not a hotel, so common areas/amenities are limited (but there are comfortable couches and a hammock). They do provide good tourist information.
Amazing and ecological gem in the middle of Lamu town in a traditional and beautifully restored and decorated house. Delicious and thoughtful breakfast and all the staff is amazing!
Trips to beaches, mangroves and other beautiful sights can easily be arranged from the hotel.
Jua House is beautifully furnished and was a perfect place to stay for the Lamu Yoga festival. The staff were very friendly and always helpful. Breakfast was amazing and to top it all the evening tea treats were delicious. Beautiful view of Shela from the roof top.
Beautiful old house amid the old town. Spacious
rooms with open air seating at the entry of each.
Fantastic roof top area wiling perfect views.
Great breakfasts and wonderful staff. Mary will
make sure you experience the best of Lamu.
Thank you Mary.
My stay in Tree house was just wonderful. The hotel is very special, amazing vibe and incredible location. It was so peaceful and the staff are very helpful and nice. I also loved the food, very healthy, tasty and big dishes. I will definitely come back.
The architecture of the home is authentic Lamu style, which brings you back in to time to a bygone regal era. And Mr. Zion, the caretaker, took care of us like royalty. We had him prepare a veggie traditional dinner, which was definitely fit for a King!
It is right in the middle of Lamu old town so you are very much immeresed in it. Arnold will give you all the information you need and the best of guides in town. Do not miss the tour of Lamu! It was great! Breakfast is wonderful and I loved the rooftop
- The hospitality of the staff ;
- The perfect location of the place (very close to Shela beach) and the amazing views from the rooftop ;
- Its swahili cuisine (excellent breakfast) as well as its pool and architecture
We stayed at the King Suite with a massive balcony that has a beautiful view. It was probably the best highlight of staying in Shela. We would highly recommend the King Suite.
