The property itself was ok. Basic, quiet and well-located. That said, there are three or four other comparable or better options within steps of this place.
A very negative experience with the staff ruined my stay. They billed my card for two rooms and refused to rectify the billing error. The lack of professionalism in addressing the situation was shocking. They basically told me tough luck and were unwilling to address their error. I would highly recommend avoiding this property. I have never been treated so badly in my life.
I contacted Booking.com who say they will contact the property to rectify the billing situation, but they also recommended disputing the charge with my bank.
Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere. The management here is lacking in integrity. Save yourself the potential headache.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora...
Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!

Our room was spacious and comfortable, meals were of a high quality, with breakfast outstanding, and all staff friendly, welcoming and efficient. When weather closed off our helicopter flights we had no problem extending our stay in the same room inspite of almost a fully booked hotel. Our experience at Scenic Franz Joseph led us to book Scenic in Dunedin and we experienced the same high quality there.
The Alpine Glacier Motel is well situated in the Franz Josef Glacier village, within walking distance to all the eateries, the helicopter landing area and adventure booking offices.
Anthony was the duty manager when we arrived and he is very professional, helpful and friendly as are all the staff there.
The room was exceptionally clean and with all the necessary items for a self catering stay. Our room had a small decking out the back from which you could see the snow capped mountains.
We had a wonderful and momentous stay.
The rural location was superb with views to the Franz Josef Glacier. We were so glad we stayed out of town. Although it's an excellent town with supermarket, cafes and facilities we enjoyed the rural surrounds of Te Awa Cottages. They felt homey, warm and comfortable with everything we needed to explore the region including maps. We enjoyed sitting on the the wide veranda, watching the sun set over the mountains and the night sky. It was one of our favourite places we stayed and we'd love to come back one day.
We were booked here but upgraded to the Te Waonui hotel so please recognize that this review is actually of that facility. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly. We enjoyed the Chef’s 5 course Degustation at the Canopy Restaurant at the hotel. Breakfasts provided plenty of variety. This was a great base to visit both Fox and Franz Josef glaciers.
Everything- beds comfy, spa bath relaxing, reception staff and cleaners very welcoming. Cleanest hotel we stayed in while in New Zealand. Tea, coffee, milk, bathroom products were all top quality. Lovely clean laundry to catch up on washing the essentials.
Amazing views from the hotel. Close to walks and town.
This is an adults only hotel and is very quiet and relaxing. It is not a chain hotel so it has a more personal feel about it, and provides a good base for exploring the area. It is close to restaurants and to commercial tourism operators. In addition the Department of Conservation has an office in town.
The room was clean, though the bathroom was basic. The shared kitchen and living space was clean and large. Though we did not stay long enough, the staff invited guests to a Christmas meal. The kids loved the giant pillow. I loved how close it was to Franz Josef town and having an accessible kitchen.
Well done to the hotel staff, Jim, who is passionate and informative to explain to us the procedures of road closure from Wanaka to franz josef thru highway state 6 during the road closure period. We managed to follow the convoy on time and reached the hotel safely. KUDOS!
The room was spacious and had a small kitchen which we used. Bed was comfortable and the location was great for walking into town and the Glacier viewing platform walk.
Lilly at reception was also very helpful and pleasant to deal with.
Would stay again.
Our stay here was comfortable, and the room was a good size. The staff at reception were very friendly, and gave us some helpful local knowledge. The location was very central to Franz Josef, with restauraunts and shops within walking distance.
Lodge was amazing and semi-private. I think I had the least private of the villas but someone had to have it. I also liked that the hotel catered to all sorts of budgets. Location was great and walking distance to everything in town.
I loved rainforest retreat! I stayed in one of the gecko cottages and it felt very secluded, peaceful and quiet. The spa was nice to relax in. The room was comfortable and I liked the kitchenette facilities.
Becca at the front desk was great! Her communication was well done and professional.
She also told us on a rainy day to go see a movie on the glaciers, etc The movie was fabulous.
Great value for the price (happy that I didn't go for the pricier ones); good location (but then, Franz Josef town is basically 4 streets); nice roommates; evening soup (free)
Such a gorgeous chalet and stunning location! Views of Franz Josef glacier from your chalet window! Very peaceful location, a lovely escape from the busyness of travel.
