Quinta do Barrieiro had been recommended to us by friends and it did not disappoint. Our room was lovely and spacious and the bed extra comfy. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the farm dog was so gorgeous! Even though we went during winter it was still a great spot for a lovely break.

We stayed at Quinta d'Abegoa's apartment, Casa do Souto, which is very cosy and ideal for two people. Everything is really well thought out so the apartment felt bigger than it actually was. The bed is very comfortable and the shower is excellent. The outside space is beautiful - we loved sitting out, listening to the birds and the bells from the sheep, while enjoying the views of the both the castle and over towards the mountains and Spain. We made the most of being able to walk to restaurants in Marvao (although it is uphill all the way!) but we also cooked at the property - the kitchen is tiny but is very well-equipped and has everything you need to self-cater. Our host, Rosa, looked after us extremely well, bringing us breakfast every day, and nothing was too much trouble. We love the area around Marvao and will definitely return for another stay at Casa do Souto.
Featuring a terrace with panoramic views of Marvão, this country house is located within the city walls.

The views are unimaginable. The bed was big and comfortable. The pillows were the best we have had in Portugal.
Our hosts could not have been more helpful.
This village must be explored

We stayed at Dom Dinis, overlooking the valley below, in December 2023. Hardly any tourists, wonderfully friendly area. Be sure to visit the church (Igreja de Santiago) of which Saramago wrote on his journey around Portugal! We ate at the excellent Varanda do Alentejo, the lamb stew was fantastic.

The castle is a must see.
The castle is a must see. The views from all directions were unobstructed and gave one the feeling of what it must have been like centuries before when the castle was used as a defensive weapon. Well worth the trip and one had access to almost the entire outer wall.

We stayed in Marvão for 3 days, 2 nights and spent the days touring around. I HIGHLY recommend taking the biking tour with Rail Bike Marvão, it's 16km through the heart of Marvão's nature.
I also HIGHLY recommend you visit the small town or Castelo de Vide.

Amazing old town and stunning castle and scenery. So quiet and relaxing. Even though we have been in the castle and museum, we intend to come back and do it all again because it was such an enjoyable experience.

Just being here gives a lift to the soul!
Just being here gives a lift to the soul! It is beautiful, everyone is so friendly, every winding street you walk down brought a smile to my face, and THAT VIEW!! You turn a corner and it takes your breath away. I walked here from Castelo de Vide and the path was well marked and gorgeous, with birds of prey hovering and I even saw what I think is an Egyptian mongoose.... Lots of beautiful arts and crafts and good restaurants. I stayed at the Estalagem de Marvao which couldnt be faulted, really beautiful and friendly. Totally recommended (tho some parts of the town walls are not for the faint hearted - but there are plenty of steps down if it gets too much for the vertiginous!).
Of all of our stays in Portugal, this was the most welcoming. The host truly made us feel at home. The breakfasts was excellent and served in a dining room with a lovely view. The location was magical, right on the top edge of town with views over the valley and sunset and a quick walk to the castle.
As some of the other reviews mention, google maps is very confused about Marvao. Just follow the main road through the gate and then follow the inside of the wall up to Casa da Avore. There is ample parking right next to the hotel.
The property exceeded the expectations. It is a house full of stories to tell. The owner José Andrade is very friendly and available to help with suggestions and knowledge about the region. The breakfast was good. The swimming pool was available, unfortunately the weather did not help in November. From our room we had line of sight to Marvão, marvelous to see the morning and the night of this city from our window. It is possible to visit the farm with the guidance of the owner. A place to return in the future.
This guest house is located at the edge of the west-facing wall of Marvao, a medieval fortress town. We had a balcony that overlooked the expansive valley and hills in the distance. Breathtaking. The hosts were friendly and answered our questions. Breakfast is included in the stay - we were able to order food items from a menu, and state the time to eat. Breakfast was set out on time and was just what we ordered. The host also offered to make reservations at local restaurants for dinner - much appreciated.
A wonderful and enchanting place to stay in the small hilltop village of Marvao! We had the entire house and it was like living in a fairytale. We watched the sunset on one side of the castle and the moonrise from our terrace. Stunning! The full eclipse of the moon was in the early morning so I walked alone through the walled village but the moon had already set and it was just me, a white cat and two birds in the pre dawn stillness.
Gorgeous little house, completely redone with attention to the minimal details. very peculiar division of the space, which makes it very cozy and architecturally amazing. Everything seems to be brand new, sparkling clean, and they thought of absolutely everything a guest May want or need. The hosts Alexandra and José were fantastic. A flawless, extremely comfortable and peaceful place firm which to enjoy the magic of Marvão!
We didn't realize just how exotic the town of Marvao was - a very pretty tiny hill-town perched on the top of a rocky outcropping. And this property is actually a small house that works very well if you end up booking both rooms like we did - one upstairs from the main room, which includes a nice livingroom and full kitchen. Highly recomend if you're a family or even a couple that likes to spread out with a bit of space.
Located in a beautiful country side, surrounded by nature is great location to hike or bike. It is close to Castelo de Marvao, Castelo da Vide, Menhir de Meade and other lovely medioeval towns, is a place to relax or work with creative projects. I could stay longer if I had have the time, this place is in my list for my next trip to Portugal.
The bedroom and the common areas are really nice and well decorated. The Hotel is modern and well equipped. It is very well located, next to the river and good restaurants. The Hotel has a view over the River Sever and towards Marvão. The surrounding landscape is very pleasant and great for walking. Fantastic breakfast with regional products
A hidden gem in a beautiful mountain village. We booked this last minute as a stopover for one night and regretted not staying longer. A small, cozy, family run hotel. The staff were really helpful and pleasant. The food was delicious and the ambience was very relaxing. You cant go wrong with this lovely hotel.
The location is spectacular. The terrace outside room 15 has astonishing views The hotel is small, quiet and well run. The staff speak Portuguese French and English. There are parking spaces just next to the hotel You can easily take a walk along ancient cobbled roads among cork and chestnut trees.
Great location, excellent food served in the restaurant and the owner Mr Fernando, who is also the taxi driver in Marvao is a fonte of local knowledge
Where else can you stay a hear a world renowned violinist practice in the next room..superb
The property is beautiful and we were very comfortable . The outdoor space is great for children and the castle of Marvão is worth visiting. We enjoyed driving through Portalegre and a dip in the sever river.
Great Marvao location. Nicely refurbished mediaval building. Friendly and helpful check-in. Great restaurants nearby. Walking distance to places of interest in Marvao.
