Getting its Rhythm Back

The home of jazz, intriguing New Orleans evokes images of Louis Armstrong, wrought-iron balconies and mouth-watering Cajun cuisine. Louisiana’s largest city, in the heart of the Deep South, the ‘Big Easy’ is being regenerated in the wake of devastating hurricane Katrina.

One area relatively unscathed was Bourbon Street – where jazz saxophones ring out of traditional bars interspersed by others offering more colourful nightlife. There are several New Orleans hotels near Bourbon Street, spread around the French Quarter with its distinctive Creole architecture.

To the south is Jackson Square, dominated by the Disney-esque St Louis Cathedral. Horses and carts wait patiently by the square, and locals set up their stools and start playing catchy tunes. Just behind is the legendary Mississippi River whose waters are still plied by paddle steamers.

From the river you get great views of the CBD skyscrapers and beside them is the huge Louisiana Superdome sports venue. Booking.com has several hotels near the Superdome, including some on Canal Street – a historic road where streetcars and the famous New Orleans Mardi Gras carnival pass down.

In the northern suburbs is New Orleans City Park, one of the oldest US parks and larger than NYC’s Central Park. Waterways lining it flow into large Lake Pontchartrain bordered by a bayou – the typical wetlands of the state.

    Something for everyone.

Something for everyone. This was a friends trip with six of us, so various interests. Walking tours, Art Museum, Bourbon Street at night, Plantation and Swamp tours. We stayed in Mid City, so quiet and only three blocks from streetcar (which was easy to use) stop to the French Quarter.

    Pleasantly surprised.

Pleasantly surprised. The city was full of history and things to do. Music filled the streets of the French quarter and there are a lot of things to do. I would definitely recommend the World War II museum, Sea Aquarium, Oak Valley Plantation tour and night ghost tours. I would definitely go again.

New Orleans is a magical city - and should be on everyone's list to visit at least once! Great food, music, art, vibe, great parks, and wonderful people! Amazing restaurants to try: Jewel of the South for dinner, Paladar 511 for brunch, Revolution for one dish only - their Death by Gumbo (sublime!). Super easy to get around - walking, Uber, driving.

New Orleans is a unique American city with a unique culture.

New Orleans is a unique American city with a unique culture. The creole/Cajun food is legendary and it is almost impossible to get a bad meal. The nightlife on Bourbon Street is not for the "faint of heart" but even a quick walk thru early in the day is a fun experience that you will not find in any other American city. And, don't forget the beignets at Cafe du Mondo - don't think about the empty calories, dig in, and enjoy!

    Absolutely loved it.

Absolutely loved it. We stayed on the French quarter and thoroughly enjoyed the shops, cafes, and architecture of the area. You can get to so much just by walking which we did a lot of. There is a Walmart just a few miles away if you need other supplies. The only down fall was there is a large amount of homeless in the area. They are not a bother to people, just could be a culture shock since they sleep on the sidewalks. We would eat breakfast at Envie Coffee and Cafe nearly every day. They had a great variety of pastries, coffee, and wonderful omelets and bagel sandwiches. There is parking along the streets and lots of one-way roads so watch out. We up paid for our gated parking lot at our hotel vs parking along the streets. Well worth it to ensure our vehicle was kept safe. We stayed at Le Richelieu, and it was fantastic and pretty centrally located to all the shops including the French market. Another downfall is that Bourbon Street can get pretty crazy after 8 pm and even the locals will tell you to avoid walking around the area after dark. Stay in well-lit areas and to main streets if you do travel after dark.

We spent most of our time at a conference or with our local friends. This was not our 1st time to New Orleans. One can easily get to the French Quarter by the E1 bus and the Canal Street trolly There are many great neighborhoods to explore and to see great architecture, museums, and old cemeteries People are very friendly and there is a great variety of food

The One 11 is in a perfect location, easily walk-able to the main attractions of the French Quarter yet in a slightly quieter street. The staff were warm and welcoming and our room was absolutely perfect. Staff were also knowledgeable about places to visit. We came here for a brief rest after a road trip following our son's New Orleans wedding and it gave us just the relaxing home we needed. Should we return to New Orleans we'd love to visit again and try the pool (it was unseasonably cool during our time here).

location was perfect, close to all the French quarter but quiet. Close enough to Mardi Gras parades but not too close ! There were other good restaurants nearly if you preferred somewhere bit more upmarket and relaxed. We loved Muriel’s in Jackson Square and Gianna. Evening snacks and drinks in hotel 5.30-7 were great if you didn’t want to out or just for an aperitif! Staff were very professional and helpful, especially Erin and Matt who made a real effort with finding us the room which worked best for us.

The location was great, on Decatur Street, near Canal, but without the road noise of being on Canal. A great location for access to Royal St., Iberville, Bienville, easily walkable to the entire French Quarter. We loved the mini-kitchen, with fridge, microwave, coffee maker. We had a small suite, so a separate bedroom and living room. Very comfortable for a New Orleans stay. The fourth floor and seventh floor courtyards were really nice, a great way to be above the city, and enjoy the outdoors.

Charming boutique hotel in a perfect location in the Quarter. Close to Esplanade Ave and quiet… away from the upper quarter bustle. Lovely and friendly front desk staff. I used to live in the French Quarter, so I’m visiting I don’t want to stay in a cookie cutter hotel. Via Convento was another perfect stay in one of my favorite cities. If you’re looking for turn down service and a chocolate on your pillow, this is not your place. If you want true old New Orleans charm… Give it a try.

The main thing that I liked about the hotel was the price. Comparable to alot of the hotels in the area, this one was moderately priced. The hotel is in a somewhat quiet area, so if your desire is to be around the happenings in the French Quarter , then this may not be the hotel for you. Parking was free inside a secure lot , which is something you don't find with alot of the hotels in New Orleans either so that was great.

I liked the thoughtfulness and convenience of this hostel. The fact that there is a fountain to fill water bottles, free breakfast, 24/7 access to tea and coffee, a bar/restaurant attached, an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable lobby, staff recommendations for how to enjoy New Orleans, flyers re: Mardi Gras activities, the location to the French Quarter, public transit, and drug stores (for emergencies.)

Beautiful hotel on Bourbon Street. Staff was amazing, very friendly and professional. The hotel itself is lovely, cool architecture, nice patio, and shockingly calm and quiet considering the Bourbon Street noise and chaos outside. Right in the middle of the French Quarter, so it's very easy to get around and there's a ton to see and do in the area.

The apartment was fabulous! If you know anything about New Orleans, you know "all" areas aren't the safest, but this quaint apartment was certainly safe! It even had a gated driveway to park in! It was so close to the French Quarter and New Orleans areas, that its famous for, that walking was very easy!!! I will certainly stay here again!!!

There is no breakfast facility but there is a great patisery over the road where queues form for breakfast so get there early. The hotel is quirky. The best bit for me was its' history as it is "the house of the rising sun". The street is quiet and a short walj to anywhere in the french quarter. I would go back.

The hotel is perfect location in the French quarter. Even though it’s complete chaos outside of the hotel with the nightlife of New Orleans, inside the hotel is always peaceful and relaxing. I didn’t hear anyone in the rooms around mine the entire stay. Even the doors shut quietly which is rare for a hotel.

The location was really great. We had a blast visiting New Orleans. Being close to Canal street while at the Sonder, we were able to quickly access the RTA trolley system and also were close enough to the French Quarter to walk there and back. Beautiful architecture and historic site. Close proximity to French Quarter (even walked home from Frenchman St) and steps away from the St. Charles Trolley for the garden district. Oh and you get drink tickets each night of your stay and boy, do they make good cocktails at all 3 of the hotel bars!
