We all Loved the beauty and history there. It was so peaceful and relaxing. We wish we could have stayed longer. The only downside was the houses need to be bug bombed to get rid of the spiders and kitchen ants. Other than that, our stay was wonderful.

I can not recommend Pioneer to all my friends, because I know it is too rustic for some of them. My first impression was not the best, but the place "grew" on me. Mitzi and David are wonderful, and we had a terrific breakfast. It is VERY out of the way and that should be noted on their website.

We are travelling from Utah to Tahoe.

We are travelling from Utah to Tahoe. I wanted to break the drive up and try something a bit different for the night. This place is like going back in time. I had only been there for about 20 minutes when I realized I had mad a big mistake. I should have stayed here for 3 days and never gone to Tahoe! 😉 I also decided I had to plan a 3-5 day trip to fully experience this gem of Western history. A few things you may want to know before you go, this place is located on a gravel road right in the middle of a ghost town called Unionville. There are no services of any kind so make sure you have enough gas and stop for dinner before you arrive. I recommend the RV park on the south side freeway exit. There is no cell service for 20 miles and no WiFi so plan on getting unplugged. We spent 2 hours at breakfast chatting with the owner (she made breakfast and is 91 at the time of this writing) and her son Dave. The family stories, as well as the stories about Unionville (, had a population of over 20,000 at one time, Mark Twain was once a resident, ask Dave about Twain's neighbor), will keep you captivated for hours. This is a must see location a true once in a lifetime experience...unless you also plan on going back as I do.

One of the most interesting places I've stayed - chock-full of books of every kind, interesting historical artifacts, antique furniture. David was an exceptional and friendly host. My 19 year old, city-raised daughter was thrilled to with the very rural feel of the property, complete with goats, hogs, dogs, cats, lizards, mountains, and history of Unionville.
