Goes right into the Muslim quarter.
Goes right into the Muslim quarter. But to the right is a little sliver of the Christian quarter, with a tiny little bar/restaurant. You can sit there a drink a beer in a paper cup and watch everyone head to prayer.

There are a couple of thieving Lebanese brothers right at the gate. I read the problems others had with downloads on their credit cards but forgot and had my backpack "dipped" for US$1500 in Shekels.
Put a downer on my trip. Hotel was a total scam, dirty, run by a speaker on a wall, never see the staff. Wandering thieves at night trying doorhandles. Had to buy a torch to use the keypad on cheap box with key for the execrable dirty room. I will never return to Jerusalem. Tel Aviv not much better. The taxi drivers keep saying how "friendly" everyone is. Oh Yeah? Cheers! I know you have to go because of bible interest etc., but don't expect "Nirvana". The best part of Jerusalem was the 'wandering cats', (felines!), in the City on Shabbat.

Buying Souveniers is one of the main reasons to visit the old city but beware of overpriced items, bargain!. There are lot of chances for getting ripped off. Before purchasing, if you have time, try and look around for nominal shops. You can buy accessories from malls or other shops too, in the old city there are only few shops that sell at reasonable prices try and find them. Bethlehem is also a good place to buy souveniers.

Before getting at the Damascus Gate there is a passage with Arabian buses and stalls, and somehow the rubbish pile might not be cleared on time and the smell might be stinky.
Nonetheless it this the nearest to the first stations of the Way of Cross.

Jerusalem’s Old City walls, built in the early XVI century...
Jerusalem’s Old City walls, built in the early XVI century by the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, mark the border between Old and New era of Jerusalem.
The wall has eight beautiful Gates, all placed in different times, leading its visitors to bright markets, sacred churches and historical reamains.
Zion Gate, Dung Gate, Lion's Gate, Herod’s Gate, Jaffa Gate, New Gate, Damascus Gate and Gate of Mercy.
The Gate of Mercy also called the Golden Gate or the Eastern Gate, has the most fascinating story, cause it is being blocked for centuries, waiting to be opened only when Messiah comes.. So who know when it will happen, if it does.
But out of all other "active gates", one of the most impressive one (as to my mind) due its monumental architecture is the Damascus Gate. Built by Emperor Hadrian in the II century AD it was named after the city from which Jerusalem’s rulers once came. Now the Muslims call it Bab el-Amud, meaning the Gate of the Column, refering to a large column with a statue of the emperor Hadrian that stood here inside of the gate in Roman times.
Jewish call it Shaar Shkhem, meaning the gate leading to the biblical city of Shechem, known also as Nablus.
Outside the gate the steps lead to the remains of a Crusader chapel with frescoes, part of a medieval roadway, as well as the single surviving arch of the Roman gate, which gives access to the fascinating remains of the original Roman plaza, the starting point of the Roman Cardo (the market in the "heart of the city).
A hologram shows the Hadrian’s column in the main plaza and if you are in right time (from 9 till 17.00) it is also possible to explore the upper levels of the gate as part of the ramparts walk.

Hajar and her colleague at the frontdesk were extremely friendly and helpful. The room was nice and spacious. Palestinian breakfast was good
and with a nice view. Location: a short walk away from Damascus gate. Will definitely come back
The location was perfect, it was right outside Damascus gate so getting the masjid was very quick and easy. There is also a lot of food stalls and restaurants on the door step which was very convenient. The staff were helpful and nice. I was there for the last 10 days of Ramadan so I spent most of my time in the masjid.
Excellent location not far from the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem. Parking provided nearby and the hotel sent someone with me in the car to provide directions. Delicious Middle Eastern breakfast with something for everyone! Very helpful staff always willing to assist and very friendly. Many historic and decorative elements in the mansion that make it a wonderful combination of modern bathrooms and quaint stone-walled bedrooms with attractive embroidery elements.
I liked the people! Ali was great, the location is beside the bus station, places to eat all around, pharmacy a few doors down, hospital around the corner, the Garden Tomb around the corner and the Damascus Gate is across the street. The hostel has character!
Excellent traditional Palestinian breakfast, and an incredible dinner restaurant. All in a great location just a short 15-minute walk from Damascus gate.
the place is beautiful; it’s a cathedral reconverted into a hotel.
it’s very close to the Damascus Gate, which is very cool. I also liked that they had their own parking as I drove there.
the staff was very nice and accommodating.
Quiet hotel in East Jerusalem, with great service, super friendly staff, and simple, clean and modern rooms. Beautiful typical Jerusalem stone building from the turn of the 20th century, a few minutes walk from the old city's Damascus gate.
Great restaurant serving local Palestinian cuisine. Well worth the money!
This was my second stay at this property, and it is definitely my hotel of choice in Jerusalem. The location is perfect, near the Damascus Gate and the Garden Tomb and close to some small shops, ATMs, and the transit line. it is in an old Ottoman building with a ton of history, and the rooms are beautiful. Breakfast is great and plentiful with Middle Eastern selections.
The staff is wonderful, and Raed, the owner, is very personable and will do whatever he can to ensure you have a great stay.
Great guest house hotel run by a Christian religious order, but no heavy handed staff. Room was adequate, AC cold, the bath small and cramped. Great value! 5 min from Damascus Gate. I'll stay there again!
