Gabrovo in the heart of Bulgaria
Gabrovo is the Bulgarian capital of humour and if you go in May you may see the carnival of humour. The House of Humour has a unique collection of cartoons from all over the world and organises a biennial of humour and satire (the next one is in 2017). The ethnographic museum Etara is worth a visit and is only a few kilometres from the town centre. Here you can get a glimpse of the local crafts people in their workshops. Using original instruments they make beautiful pots, rugs, jewellery, and traditional music instruments. You can combine the trip to the Etara with a visit to the Sokolski Monastery where in the little blue top church you will find some exquisite frescos. The old Bulgarian capital Veliko Turnovo is under an hour's drive from Gabrovo. Don't miss visiting the little mountain town of Triavna and Bozenci village. And if you have more time and a good map, explore the many eco paths in the Bulgarka Nature Park.
