Located in Latacunga, REEC Latacunga by Oro Verde Hotels offers a terrace. This 3-star hotel offers room service, a 24-hour front desk and free WiFi. Facility is very new, modern, and clean. The shower was the best shower re hot water and pressure we had in Ecuador. Breakfast was good and they were able to make European style coffees which was a pleasant bonus. Area is in a central part of Latacunga -- we never felt unsafe although we did not go out after dark. Dinner at the restaurant on site was a bit pricey but lunch was great and a good deal. So we were stuck in Latacunga during the ongoing protests. One night turned into four. Despite everyone being pretty stressed (it was just me, my husband and several employees who were living onsite at that point), service was still impeccable. They were able to get us a slightly cheaper rate. Amazingly, they were also able to find us a driver willing to shuttle us to Quito as well. Just went above and beyond during a stressful time.

It is a fairly large town. We visited the closed market which was fascinating. We ate some pork from one of the many food stalls and it was very tasty. Getting around Latacunga was easy . We ate at El Gringo and La Gorda, owned by an Ecuadorian Mauricio who lived in New Orleans for 35 years. The food is mediocre and the attitude of the owner was arrogant and insulting to us when we asked if he had hamburgers. I don't know if we would have gone there if it wasn't on the way to Lake Quilatoa and Cotopaxi Volcano.
There should be only one reason to stay in Latacunga - to do Quilotoa and/or Cotopaxi. The city is so dirty and smells and doesn't feel safe. There is a nice fancy supermarket but that's the only nice thing we found.
From the second I arrived I felt at home. We were welcomed with spiced tea & empanadas in front of a big fireplace. The room was plenty spacious enough & well decorated. The bathroom was clean & the shower was hot & pressure was perfect. The staff was extremely helpful & welcoming. The food was amazing! It was pricey for Ecuador but well worth it. The grounds were well maintained & the views spectacular. Waking up to views of volcanoes & horses out our window was awesome. We hiked one of the trails to a waterfall. We also did a 2 hour horseback ride to try to catch a glimpse of Cotopaxi volcano. It was incredible. I could have stayed forever.
Los Mortiños was a fantastic get away spot for a few days. The location is perfect with a wonderful view of Cotopaxi (when it decides to come out from the clouds)! The owner is very warm and welcoming and a wonderful host. Hot tea greeted us at our arrival and the hacienda building is very charming and well decorated. The wood stoves throughout the building gives it a feeling of home and added warmth as well. The food is delicious.... Though it's not 5 star gourmet, that is not what you want in this kind of setting. The food is like what your mother would make at home for a hearty chilly evening meal. Either way the simplicity of the food is what comforts your belly at 3600m (12000ft)! Don't come here if you just want to watch tv or stare at your phone. First off there are no TVs in the rooms which is perfect as you need to unplug. This is a perfect place to unplug for a few days. The horse riding was peaceful and humbling as you near the volcano. Also the Massage therapist that offers service there is excellent and highly recommended. And to top it all off the llamas on the property are adorable and very tame offering a great photo with Cotopaxi in the distance! We visited recently for a mini honey moon.... And it was the perfect setting to get away and admire the "neck of the moon" (translation of "Cotopaxi") !!! We definitely will come back for more relaxation and solitude.
It was a larger city than what we expected. Many beautiful history buildings and nice parks to visit. Local market is very interesting and a good place to see how local people shop. A good place to stay if one plans to visit the Cotopaxi and Quilotoa.
Excursions, food, decor and most of all the attention and friendliness of the owner were amazing. You also can't be the location as it's right outside the north entrance of the park. If driving to the resort, recommend contacting staff first for directions. We'll definitely be back and highly recommend others stay here when visiting Cotopaxi!
There isn't much out there to do apart from touring Cotopaxi and crashing at a good place nearby. It's just another quaint low key village at the foothills of Cotopaxi.
Amazing days! Traveled with my wife and 2 kids. Horseback riding tô Cotopaxi was unforgettable! Rooms are cozy, comfortable and warm. Restaurant was incredible! Great menu and awesome dishes! After one month aroun Ecuador, I would say that El Porvenir holds the beat value for money in the country!
Good place for visiting Lake Quilotoa and Cotopaxi volcano. There isn't too much else to see in town. Recommend Hotel San Agustin Plaza and El Gringo y La Gorda restaurant.
A good place to stay to see Laguna Quitoloa and Volcan Cotopaxi We found direct bus, Vivero, to Laguna Quitoloa and return, at the local bus station . We stayed at the Hotel Rodelu and ate at the restaurant in the hotel. Taxis were easy and good value to get to hotel from the bus station, and return.
Machachi
This was a fantastic hotel if you want to explore Cotopaxi and the surrounding mountains. The staff were extremely attentive and helpful in planning everything from our transportation to our excursions. We were greeted with warm drinks and a smile. Breakfast is a must and delicious! Dinner is equally as good and tastes fantastic after a long day out. When we stayed it was a little cloudy, but the views are still fantastic! The rooms are comfy and warm with a wood fireplace in every room. Nothing but great things to say about this hotel.
Latacunga
The value of the hostel is incredible, the rooms are basic but clean and comfortable and Marco and his family/staff are super friendly and exceptionally helpful. We stayed for one night before doing the Quilotoa loop and two nights after. Marco took us for free to the bus station to go to Sigchos, up to Cotopaxi ($35/person) and to the bus station again to Quito for free. Breakfast is good ($2.50) for juice, cheese stuffed bread, fruit bowl, scrambled eggs and coffee/tea.
Latacunga
Our best accommodation in our 3-week trip in Ecuador, by far! As the hotel was quite empty, we were graciously upgraded to a bigger room, very comfortable. Roof terrace with a view of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. And the host gave us tons of tips and information about excursions in the area, whether Quilotoa or Cotopaxi. As travel agencies in Latacunga had mostly all closed down during the pandemic, he arranged a driver to go to Cotopaxi. Extremely kind and helpful and welcoming.
Latacunga
Great Hostel with very very helpful people, it’s the perfect place for mountaineers, they have everything you need for hiking or mountain climbing with best prices around. At the hostel u have a very complete shared kitchen and they do a big effort to keep the hostel clean at all times. From roof u can have a nice view of Cotopaxi if its clear. Best value for money hands down, super recommended!
- Cleanliness - Bedroom including comfort of bed - Location being close to two lovely squares - Excellent wifi - The hotel kindly organised a taxi driver for us. His cost was reasonable and he even organised a tour guide for us at Cotopaxi. That said, he wasn't perfect: he used his phone at the wheel and he laughed at others involved in a car crash, something we didn't appreciate.
Machachi
The accommodation was beautiful. It's near the Cotopaxi National Park and area is very nice. Host Darwin was very kind and he was cooking very well. The restaurant has very good atmosphere with the fireplace. The best bonus was we met with great Ecuadorian people who were also accommodated here :). We really recommend this accommodation if you want to visit Cotopaxi volcan.
Great place at the entrance of the Cotopaxi national park. Sleeping at this place allowed me to bypass the blockade due to the protest in Ecuador, so I'm really glad I slept there. There is a nice fire place and the room was very nice as well. The food was pretty good and cheap. And there are lamas in the garden. Definitely recommends!
Machachi
The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and very clean. I really like the dining room area, kitchen, and showers have hot water. It feels more like an airbnb in the mountains than a hostel. It is very reasonably priced and is close to cotopaxi NP north entrance, along with La ruta de la cascadas. Its very quiet and peaceful at night.
Machachi
One of the most welcoming experiences at a hotel or hostel. Aracely (the owner) was very sweet and kind taking her time to welcome us and acclimate us to the lodge and vicinity. They provide simple and delicious meals at the property. it was amazing to wake up to a clear view of Cotopaxi Volcano.
Hacienda Santa Ana
This hotel provides a unique experience and attention. The attention and dedication provided by the owner "Rocio" and the facility managers Edison and Victor goes beyond and above. The hotel location allows you do all the highland activities expected in the Cotopaxi area.
Latacunga
Great price! Kitchen was good, chill area was good. Hostel was safe. Overnight storage for $0.50/night. We booked the Cotopaxi summit with the hostel and had a great experience doing the summit. $250 for everything included.
Latacunga
Great location with a view of Cotopaxi. Danny was so helpful and friendly and and made check in really easy. He also took us on a day trip to the volcano. The apartment was comfortable and was an easy walk to the centre of town.
The property was super cute and very close to Cotopaxi National Park. The staff there were very helpful as well. We had a sort of “family” dinner with everyone staying at the hostel which was nice.
Latacunga
Location was amazing, kitchen was big, we could do laundry, bathrooms were cleaned every day, could book a Cotopaxi trip right from the hostel
Wonderful family owned hotel with an elegant breakfast. Very helpful in setting up a tour to Cotopaxi.
Machachi
Competent staff and the restaurant is ok. Very close from the cotopaxi national park.
beautiful property, great room. staff are super helpful and lovely. great place to relax.
Loved being inside the park! Beautiful setting, friendly staff, good food, cute and comfortable room. Relaxing place to hangout in the main lodge.
