Take time to walk about and get off the beaten track a bit. Use the public transport - Lothian Buses has a great on line guide. Great for a pre-Christmas break - the Christmas lights and markets are lovely.
Small "planned town" from the 18th Century, Gifford is today quiet getaway on 15 minutes from both Edinburgh and the East Lothian Golfing Coastline. Of particular interest nearby are the remains of Yester Castle and its famous Goblin Ha'
We enjoyed every moment of our 11-day stay in the city. The city is full of historical sites. The close proximity of the city can be visited by means of pretty good daily tour busses. Highlands is of course is a must-see. The city buses are cheap, 1.6 pounds/person. The surprising thing is that you may pay more than double for the same destination. An example: Bus 40A (Lothian bus) to Queen's Ferry costed us 1.6 pounds/person. Coming back with the same 40A (the bus was the same inside and outside) we had to pay 3.30 pounds/person. The driver told us it was a different company.
Edinburgh has so much history packed into the Old Town and the New Town. Even walking down the same street twice you'll see something new. For great pictures a climb up to Arthur's Seat and Calton Hill are a must. A climb to the Scott Monument is also worth the time and 5 pounds. Lothian Buses can get you anywhere you want to go just download their App. Of course, the Castle is a must.
Edinburgh is a calm peaceful city. The greenery in this city is much more than the greens in all the capitals of Europe put together. Don't miss the hop-on hoff-off bus service by Lothian buses. A 24hrs or 48Hrs pass would be enough. Edinburgh Castle, Scottish National Gallery, Royal Brittania, Holyroodhouse Palace are some attractions in and around the city. If you are fond of Highlands and nature reserves, a visit to Loch Ness, Scottish Highlands with a cruise in the Lake would be worth it. It is a 12 hrs guided tour. Some choice of eateries could be found around Haymarket area and near city center. Easily accessible by bus from airport via Airlink Bus 100. Waverely station connects you well with London and other parts of England.
There are so many reasons why I keep returning to Edinburgh: awesome topography, atmosphere, interesting history to explore, architecture that is uniquely Scottish, beautiful coastline in East Lothian, Fife and Borders, lots to do in the local area for a variety of different travelers, good transport links to other parts of Scotland...
Fantastic city. Really cool place, so much to do there, very easy to get around, would definitely recommend going there. Large variety of restaurants, Caravan Thai restaurant by the university and Bread Meats Bread on Lothian Road were highlights. The Standard Comedy club in York Place was brilliant. All in all great city.
Edinburgh is my home. I firmly believe that there is no-where else on Earth like Edinburgh. The skyline is incredible, the history spellbinding and the pub and restaurant scenes guaranteed to whet any appetite. Edinburgh is quite compact, so most major sites can be seen on foot and there is a second-to-none local bus service which is very affordable compared to other UK cities. My favourite spots in the city include Holyrood Park, which contains Arthur's Seat and the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh Castle and its esplanade which afford great views of the city, Calton Hill, the Meadows, Princes Street Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Blackford Hill, Cramond Island and the Shore in Leith. Half an hour by bus from Edinburgh and you are in the beautiful countryside of Midlothan, East Lothian and West Lothian.
Edinburgh is a great city that has to offer amazing sights, shops and cultural happenings within the walking distance of the city centre. If you're lucky with the weather, definitely have a picnic on Canton Hill with the view over the entire city or checkout the Royal Botanical Gardens! Travelling by bus is mainly unnecessary if you're willing to walk a little, but if you do want to take a bus (e.g. to travel to the Botanical Gardens) a DayRider for the Lothian Buses costs only £4. I sometimes found it a bit confusing to find the right bus stop on Princes Street as there are loads of stops in a row but the buses only stop on particular ones.
The room was spacious and comfortable, with a pleasant view over the town to the Lammermuir Hills, I had breakfast each morning, which more than met my requirements and set me up for the day to explore the East Lothian coast line. Had dinner on two occasions; found the food excellent. The dinner menu offered a wide choice. The staff at all times were attentive. This is a relevantly small hotel which has worked out a system allowing guests to book a mealtime in advance. The system works to everybody's advantage.
Beautiful hotel and staff were so friendly and professional. We stayed in a deluxe room and it was absolutely beautiful with a view over the garden. Room was made up every day. Garden was lovely and snacks and drinks were served daily in the garden if you wished. We were visiting relatives, however, this hotel is ideal for commuting to Edinburgh. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Edinburgh/Midlothian area.
The hotel is welcoming, clean and the rooms updated to modern standards. The staff are friendly, and the Inn (for dinner and breakfast) is really outstanding. The price was competitive, and location is convenient to Edinburgh and East Lothian, with plenty of parking. Rooms are quiet despite proximity to main roads.
Lovely rural pub hotel. Bar / restaurant available. Good food - dinner and breakfast. Decent rooms, comfortable bed. Good location for East Lothian - Museum of Flight, North Berwick Locked storage area in loading yard for bikes. Friendly, helpful staff. Traditional decor and furniture
Clean, good value hotel in Aberlady Excellent hosts and friendly helpful staff Lovely beer garden at the rear of the inn Whilst we didn’t eat in the evening the menu looked good Nice continental breakfast Excellent location for all the golf courses along the East Lothian coast Recommended
Food was good , though choice was somewhat limited . Haddington is a good location for exploring East Lothian and relatively close to Edinburgh , so catching the bus is feasible as it takes about an hour on weekdays . The bedroom was large and the bed very comfortable .
Beautiful small hotel - an architectural gem designed by Lutyens with Gertrude Jekyll gardens. Wonderful location in the dunes of the East Lothian coast. Discreet and competent service. Quiet and comfortable single room. Very good food.
Haddington
Great location for buses into Edinburgh and general East Lothian exploring. The apartment had everything we needed.
All was perfect. Good food and service staff.
Perfect location, friendly service and very cosy hotel
The area , the facilities and the lounge bar
Surprisingly great hotel close to the airport. The hotel is a nice with an old charm and a great spa with green surroundings. The restaurant is superb, for both dinner and breakfast.
Staff, Location, cleanliness, view of the room, heater, warm bath water, good internet.
We loved our room! Very spacious and big bathroom. Staff very friendly and great that we could get good cocktails to our room whilst getting ready for dinner.
Beautiful property, lovely staff
Everything, from location to friendly staff and nice decor.
