Auckland, Wellington, and Rotorua are popular with other travelers visiting North Island.
It's not possible to give a fair appraisal of Paihia, since we visited for only two nights to tour the Bay of Islands and were forced to abandon our plan by exceptionally heavy rain. Our motel was typical for NZ's North Island, and the dining facilities were also typical for a small town.
Great fashion, Walks, food, central to a lot of places im the north island so visiting other towns are easy. Great place To relax or to live for a family or travelers even a young family raising children.
Any visit to the north island would be complete without spending two or three days in Rotorua. There you will find Maori culture, English gardens, geysers, hot mud pools and jungles. Also, if you like suuch things as zip lining and zorbing, this is a hub of options.
Husband and I enjoyed visiting the local Museum (interesting art exhibit while we were there), and beautiful Hamilton Gardens is a must see. Local classic car museum and diner were fun as well. For families, the local zoo is a very good one to go to with a good variety of animals to see. We enjoyed eating at Speight's Ale House and Good Burger while in town this time. If you're into doing a little shopping while in town and visit the large centrally located shopping mall with attached parking garage, please note that you should show you receipts at the customer service desk by the stairs/elevators from the garage near the pay station, as that will net you money off or totally free parking (it's something like an hour or two free for every $10 spent). Also (call ahead to be sure they're open), the local Olde Berry Farm has awesome homemade ice creams from their fruit, as well as pick your own opportunities at times and a stand where they sell their seasonal fruit. They have all kinds of berries. Outdoorsy fun can be had seeing Hobbiton (the Lord of the Rings Hobbiton set -- get the NZ brewed ginger beer at the Green Dragon, trust me!), and at some nearby cave systems that offer some spelunking, rafting and tour fun for those who are up for doing some caving. Having been to Hamilton several times now, I highly recommend it as a base of operations while on North Island in New Zealand. Many other interesting/fun areas and activities are within an hours' drive of the city and it's a beautiful area.
Wellington is scenic but where in New Zealand isn't it? I think one goes to Wellington for purpose, not to stay. We were passing through to get to part further north on the North Island.
Rotorua is a "must not miss" when visiting the North Island of New Zealand. The volcanic area provides a range of hot springs and colorful water views when you visit designated sights. Take a relaxation massage and hot springs tub as part of your visit. The local museum provides historical information and a good cafe choice.
Rotorua is always a wonderful place to stay and explore the wonders of the North Island of New Zealand. It is a must visit for travelers visiting NZ but only intending to stay in the north island.
Great place from where to explore North Island. In Auckland, the War Memorial Museum is a good place to learn about New Zealand's history (it is not only a war museum, but covers much general history as well). Had a great dinner at the stylish Soul Bar in the harbour.
A gateway to visit North island, many good restaurants, easy transportation. The Northern Exploerer train is must do for first time travellers. Take day trips from Auckland to Rotorua, Hobbiton etc. I took a hop on hop off bus to look around Auckland.
We enjoyed visiting Auckland, Rotorua, Honiara, Matamata, Matakohe, Whangarei, Dargaville, Whangarei Falls, Wairere Falls, Tutukaka, Hikurangi. Our favorite adventures included the Kauri museum and the Waipoua Kauri tree/forest, Auckland War Memorial museum, Sky Tower, the New Market, Agrodome, Jack Morgan Museum, the beach’s and Hobbiton movie set, Auckland Zoo and Kelly’s aquarium. We met many wonderful people and enjoyed the natural beauty of the north island. We are already planning a return visit because we didn’t have enough time to visit the south portion of the North Island.
We had a big, modern room with comfy chairs, a wonderful bed, and the best shower water pressure we've found on the North Island. The wifi worked well, and the ceiling fan was good for keeping the room cool at night. The hotel's location is unbeatable: across the street from the seafront walk, next to the terrific Puke Ariki museum, and a few blocks from the restaurant strip on Devon Street. We were lucky to snag one of the limited parking spaces in the hotel's lot, so we left the car there and went all over town on foot.
Ohakune
This apartment has been designed with love and is beautiful! It is very obviously cared for, maintained and so well appointed! It is spotlessly clean! The wifi was excellent and the food and treats left really are a treat! The bed was comfy and it was a joy to stay there! The communication with the host was excellent and we were able to just let ourselves in. It is in a very quiet area but only about a 15 minute drive into Ohakune. I will definitely book here again for a break when travelling up the North Island.
Stayed one night while travelling around the North Island. Very convenient location in the centre of Tauranga. Very friendly welcome at reception, and speedy check in. We had booked an executive king room which was on the eighth floor, and very roomy with a lounge area, tea and coffee making facilities, and bottles of water. Comfortable bed, and good air conditioning. The undercover parking garage accessed at the rear of the property at $10NZ for the night was a bonus as we had a car full of luggage.
Cambridge
This was one of the last stops on our jolly around north island, staying in a variety of accommodation from motels to fancy hotels. Can honestly say this was one of the nicest and by a long long way, the best value for money. The holiday house has everything you need, their are games for the kids and kind owners. The pool and hot tub were super and the couple keep an immaculate and beautiful garden ***** Breakfast simple and just what we needed. Would recommend.
Cambridge
Cambridge Retreat was an excellent place to spend our first night in New Zealand. Margaret made us feel so welcome. She not only gave us an excellent recommendation for dinner - which was a very short away but also gave us several ideas of places to visit whilst on the north island. Some of which we have already done and have enjoyed immensely. Our room was great as was our breakfast. Thank you Margaret for a great stay.
Ohope Beach
Wonderful location. Ohope Beach region is one of the best spots we visited on NZ north island. The apartment is even nicer than the photos indicate. Our host arranged the "best view" of the available apartments :) ...also, I always appreciate the consumables available in accommodation that I book, i.e, paper-towel in the kitchen, ground coffee and a plunger and a generous jug of milk :)
Paihia
Fabulous accommodation here at Paihia Central Apartments. Everything you need for a comfortable few nights. Hosts are very lovely and helpful, views over the Bay of Islands are fab. We weren’t so lucky with the weather (North Island’s stormy 2023 summer) but enjoyed our stay regardless. Would recommend keeping your luggage light, as there are plenty of steep steps up to the house.
Everything. The rooms had everything I needed, free parking outside. It had a pool and good beer in the bar. Nice little courtyard. The owners obviously care, and there’s attention to detail. It’s the best hotel I’ve stayed in and I’ve done the whole of North Island. I’ve stayed in a lot more expensive and fancier ones, but I prefer this one all day long.
New Plymouth
Oh my goodness. First of all. We were blown away with the breathtaking views that we had from the Studio apartment. All areas of the Studio were exceptionally clean, bed was superb comfortable and the bathroom was immaculate. As we had stayed in several stays across the North Island, we rated this one the highest.
Whitianga
The Crow's Nest was the highlight of our 16 day tour around 6 different locations in the North Island. Staff were always available and extremely helpful. Our apartment was exceptional in every way. Cannot fault this accommodation on anything. It is 10 out of 10 in every way. Will certainly stay here again.
Taupo
The location was exemplary, looking out over Lake Taupo. The facilities (bed, shower, room) were all of the highest order and the staff were friendly and supportive. This was easily the best room that we have stayed in so for on our travels through New Zealand's North Island
Raglan
This was a very comfortable studio apartment within walking distance of the town of Raglan. It was a perfect first stop on our roadtrip around the north island. It was extremely clean. There are blackout curtains. We slept well and recommend Long Street Studio.
Featherston
I stayed in one of the hotel rooms, not the little adjacent campsite or RV hook-up. This is a very nice stop along the road thru the North Island. It was clean, and the little kitchen had everything you'd need. Good bed. Nice little porch. Great hot shower.
Palmerston North
The apartment was gorgeous! Staff was very friendly and kind. My family and I will definitely be visiting again next time we’re in the North Island. Thank you Fitzherbert Castle Motel! If I could give you more than 5 stars I would! Anna from South Island
Paihia
Location was great. Easy walking to restaurants etc Great views from apartment Carpet could do with a clean, but everything else was good. Daily room service was great. It was probably the most expensive accommodation we had paid around the north island
This is amazing. In a national park, high above the plains. From the road end it is one of the best views in the North Island. Hotel was new, super clean and nice. We loved it. We ate onsite which was a cut above normal meal. Wow. Highlight of the trip.
New Plymouth
This was the best apartment we have stayed in during our trip to the North Island. Everything was perfect and the beautiful breakfast was an amazing addition. Thank you Shane and Mel.
I Love the Royal Hotel its my fav accommodation in the North Island. Such amazing opulent decor with steam punk twist.
Fantastic check in, all the staff were very friendly! the beds were extremely comfy and we had a little fridge for our snacks. The pools were great to relax in after the road trip and the sunset was amazing! We also booked dinner at the Hilton which was super yummy! It was such a great trip, and only a 3 min walk into town
