2 days in Ende. Took the early morning flight from Labuan Bajo, arrived at our hotel and immediately hited a motorcycle. We then rode 2 up over fairly good roads to Kelimutu, stopping at various Warungs along the way for lemonade and a rest. The next day we rode to Blue stone beach. What a terrific site. We had lunch of grilled fish, rice and vegetables for $AUD12 at a little Warung 1.9km past the more touristy lunch spot. It was delicious, delivered with a smile and a cold Bintang beer. The coastal road was a fantastic day ride, only 30km from Ende.
Ende is the most boring city in the world. There is literally nothing here. Spend a night here on your transfer or on the way to Moni, but not any longer. Believe me, I made that mistake. There is one waterfall just out of the main city that I visited. Was a nice distraction, but not worth staying for. It is very easy to get around the city though and there's warung everywhere to get local food. Western food is available, but takes some more time to find. Easy bus connection to Moni, Maumere or Bajawa. The locals are very friendly, the photo was at my favourite gado2 place hanging with some local people.
The traditional cakes, fruit and vegetables are excellent with the place of the founding father of Republic Indonesia, Kelimutu - three colour lakes and the beautiful sarong are the only things to find. The sea look likes a virgin
Ende was a beautiful highlight of our Trans Flores road trip. It's a very pretty village, with stunning views on the volcano and to the ocean on the other side. Our stay was too short there, almost not enough to intake and appreciate the beauty and the vibe.
Ende of the world? Not quite but nothing much here for us tourists except for Bung Sukarno’s home. (Indonesia’s first president 1945-67) There is a garden too but that was closed. The waterfront had some nice looking cafes but most were closed. There is a market and a number of other shops as you would expect in a mid-large town.
A very vibrant and busy town, as a white family we attracted a lot of attention, not always good. Uncomfortable walking around the town. We used taxis to move around the town. If I was traveling by myself I would have used public transportation, the bemos look fun!
