Every year we do a trip to the Pinawa Dam. It’s worth a whole day, if you pack a lunch and bring swim suits and towels and water shoes to explore the rapids and rocks and do some wandering. Bring a tube and go down the small rapids into a nice calm pool of water. Watch kayakers navigate some of the rapids. Check out the ruins of the old dam and what remains. Make sure to wander the “old Pinawa town” which is actually just stones marking where the old buildings in town stood before the dam burst, flooding the town. It is actually eerie to imagine an old town standing in what is now just a vacant field of tall grass and wild flowers. It is a beautiful location. But make sure you get your park pass ahead of going there (you can get it at the liquor store or the co-op gas station in Lac Du Bonnet but not sure where in Pinawa) as the office is usually closed and the park patrol actually come every day and DO ticket you $75 for not having a pass. (Has happened to me before). The actual town of Pinawa is a few kms away and is as sleepy as it gets but you can spot deer in the streets and peoples yards if you are lucky and there is a great Boat Cafe (or some name like that) with great ice cream. There is a lovely walk along the water that you can start at the marina (next to the boat cafe place). It is just a calm, peaceful tiny little place but so quaint. Great for a day or two, but not much more than that.
