Principal York, hotel in Hessay

The 4-star Principal York, formerly The Royal York Hotel, is set in quiet gardens, with views into the new Garden Room overlooking York Minster.

The room was a really good size and the bed was very comfortable. Did not stay for Breakfast as we were moving on to another location so can't comment. So close to everything we had come to see - Railway Museum, York Minster and the shopping - no car needed The bar was very busy so we relaxed in the Garden room - very peaceful and quiet even with a wedding going on. The gardens are beautiful

Elmbank Hotel - Part of The Cairn Collection, hotel in Hessay

A boutique Art Nouveau hotel in historic York. Minutes from the heart of the city, overlooking the Knavesmire Strays, lies the Elmbank Hotel, a unique 19th-century mansion with a rich history.

Just a 15 minute stroll into the city centre, staff were so friendly and helpful. The room was clean, with all amenities provided (including iron and hairdryer). The decoration was lovely- felt really expensive despite it being so reasonably priced! The shower was excellent too- no problems with water pressure like you sometimes get. Would recommend to anyone!

The approach to the property is off a main road (York to Harrogate) and is difficult to see. The drive into the property is narrow and twists and turns through trees, Signs on the door are not that welcoming, particularly an instruction to take off shoes when entering. Had we been just passing traffic looking for a B&B rather than having already paid, we would have turned around and gone on to somewhere else. The whole property which includes a small lake is very heavily wooded. Once inside however it is most satisfactory apart from the lack of space for opening luggage.
